As part of the House of Europe project, we had the opportunity to visit master piano maker Bernhard Balas ( ) in his workshop in Vienna. With great precision, exceptional craftsmanship, and remarkable attention to detail, he runs one of the last traditional piano-making workshops in Europe.

Bernhard Balas opened his first workshop in 1993, and since 2004 his business has been located on Märzstraße in Vienna’s 15th district. In his workshop, a wide variety of string keyboard instruments are crafted, including clavichords, spinets, harpsichords, fortepianos, modern upright pianos, and grand pianos.

At the heart of his work are not industrially manufactured consumer products, but individually crafted musical instruments, carefully handmade to meet the specific needs and artistic requirements of musicians. Today, the workshop of Bernhard Balas is regarded as one of the best-equipped piano-making workshops in Europe.

In addition to building and selling instruments, Bernhard Balas also offers comprehensive servicing, maintenance, and repair work for string keyboard instruments.
