✨ What a wonderful evening! ✨

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of bringing together the ELT Department at the University of Graz and the Fremdsprachendidaktik at the University of Klagenfurt for our Research and Project Evening.

It was inspiring to see the variety of projects, research, collaborations, and teaching materials being shared — and to connect with so many people passionate about language education and research. 📚💡

Special thanks is due to our organizers from the Fremdsprachendidaktik team at the University of Klagenfurt for providing the facilities, organizing the event, and creating such a welcoming atmosphere.

Join our last teacher talk of the semester with Beatrice Spindler from the Emil-Fischer-Schule, Berlin, titled „Learner Autonomy".

She teaches very diverse pre-vocational classes, where students often have priorities other than school. In her talk, she will explain how she adapted Leni Dam’s autonomous teaching approach in her English classes in order to better meet her students’ needs.

📚✨ Doctoral School 2026 (DQ)

From April 29 to May 2, 2026, this year’s Doktoratskolloquium für Fremdsprachendidaktik (DQ) took place at the Federal Institute for Adult Education (bifeb) in Strobl, Austria. 🇦🇹

PhD candidates came together with researchers and experts from across Austria, Germany, and beyond to exchange ideas, collaborate, and foster connections.

The program included:
– Interactive workshops
– Student presentations
– Networking & 1:1 consultations

🤝 Organized in cooperation with Prof. Dr. Carolyn Blume (PH Heidelberg)

The International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL) is one of the most important international conferences in the field, bringing together over 2,400 delegates from more than 100 countries each year.

This year, our team from the ELT Research and Methodology department, together with 30 students from the University of Graz, attended the conference in Brighton, UK.

Thank you to everyone who made this experience so memorable 🌊👩‍🏫. See you again next year in Birmingham! 🇬🇧

Wednesday 15th was a full day of research exchange, bringing together three PhD students (two from Graz, one from Jyväskylä) and three professors from Graz, Auckland, and Tallinn.

They explored research ethics in applied linguistics, with a special focus on emotions. The discussions were rich and inspiring - laying the groundwork for a future collaborative paper ✨

At the University of Graz, we were delighted to host Prof. Gary Barkhuizen (University of Auckland) for his guest talk “From Narrative Inquiry to Case Method Pedagogy in Language Teacher Education: My Story.” ✨📚

The talk explored the shared focus of narrative inquiry and case-based pedagogy-stories. Through engaging examples from his book "The Language Teacher Education Casebook" (2026), participants gained insight into how stories can be used to understand the experiences of language teachers and learners alike.

At the University of Graz, we were delighted to host Asst. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Saraç and Asst. Prof. Dr. Serhat Güzel from Balıkesir University for their workshop “A Gamified Trial for Eco-Aware Language Teaching: A Window into EcoLingua.” 🌱✨

Bringing together sustainability and language education, the session explored how gamification can meaningfully support eco-aware teaching practices. Participants engaged in hands-on activities, examined materials through an ecoliteracy lens, and designed creative, SDG-focused lesson ideas for the language classroom.
