Vor mehr als zwanzig Jahren beschlossen ProfessorInnen des Instituts für Amerikanistik der Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz einen Ort für Fi

lmliebhaberInnen, ForscherInnen und Studierende zu schaffen. Die Idee nahm ihren Ursprung mit ein paar Filmen, die GastprofessorInnen aus den Vereinigten Staaten der USA im Institut gelassen hatten. Dank der Initiative zweier Filmliebhaber verwandelte sich die Sammlung langsam aber sicher in das beeindruckende Archiv für Filme unterschiedlichster Genres und Zeiten, das es heute ist. Suchen Sie nach einem Dokumentarfilm über die Geschichte der USA? Oder einem Western Streifen ohne Clint Eastwood? Sie sind ein Fan der Kardashians? Sind wir auch und wir haben diese Filme ebenfalls. Mit mehr als 3.000 Filmen und Fernsehserien, unterteilt in Kategorien, wie „African American", „Dokumentarfilme", „Animation", „Film Noir" und „Science Fiction", stellt die Sammlung des Medienarchivs eine hervorragende Grundlage für Recherche im Bereich Film Studies dar.

🎬Join us for a rare screening of a 1928 silent film, brought to life with live piano music and expert commentary at Geidorf Kino.

As part of the lecture series Transnational Dialogues: Bridging Continents Towards a Global Vision, organized by Professor Brandt and Professor Mallick (University of Graz), we would like to warmly invite all interested students, colleagues, and members of the public to a film screening of Frauenarzt Dr. Schäfer (1928, dir. Jacob Fleck and Luise Fleck).

The screening will take place on 📆Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at ⏱️2:30 p.m. at 📽️Geidorf Kino.

The film will be accompanied live by pianist Luca Cometto and introduced by Professor Antonia Lant (New York University), who will also hold a Q&A session afterwards.

🚨We warmly invite you to attend the lecture “India as a Place of Longing in American Culture” (Indien als Sehnsuchtsort in der amerikanischen Kultur) held by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Stefan L. Brandt (University of Graz) as part of the Montagsakademie 2025/26 on 🗓️1 June 2026 at ⏱️7:00 pm.

The lecture explores the enduring fascination with India in Western cultural imagination and its significance for the development of American literature, philosophy, and cultural identity within a global context.

India has long occupied a central place in the Western imagination—not only as a geographical destination, but as a symbolic space of wealth, spirituality, and transformation. From Columbus to the American Transcendentalists and into the present, it has served as a powerful projection surface for cultural desires and visions of selfhood. The lecture explores how these imaginaries have shaped American literature, philosophy, and cultural identity, highlighting the global interconnectedness of cultural history.

Attendance is free of charge and no registration is required. The event will take place 📍at the AULA der Universität Graz, Hauptgebäude (1. Stock), Universitätsplatz 3, 8010 Graz, and will also be available via regional livestream locations as well as online at montagsakademie.uni-graz.at.

The lecture will be held in German.
