The Centre for Southeast European Studies of the University of Graz is an interdisciplinary forum for teaching and research on Southeastern Europe. Talk with Olivera Simić: “Madam War Criminal” – Women, War and Justice

The legal scholar and author Olivera Simić (Professor at Griffith University, Australia) will visit the University of Graz to discuss her latest book,
Madam War Criminal: The Extraordinary Life and Trial of a Woman Accused of War Crimes (Hurst Publishers).

In a conversation with Heike Karge and Armina Galijaš, Olivera Simić will offer insights into the making of the book, her research on war, gender and transitional justice, as well as the biographical and personal dimensions behind this extraordinary court case.

The book tells the story of a woman charged with war crimes and examines how gender roles, media representations and legal practices intersect in contexts of violence and post-war reckoning. Simić combines legal analysis, feminist theory and personal reflection, opening up new perspectives on responsibility, guilt and justice.

The Centre for Southeast European Studies, Karl-Franzens-University Graz has secured Austria’s only newly funded Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence.

Europeanisation & Discourses – Southeast Europe (EuDiSEE) will be led by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Florian Bieber and coordinated by Dr. Hrvoje Paić and Dr. Dorian Jano.

EuDiSEE is an interdisciplinary academic and policy platform that examines Europeanisation in Southeast Europe as both a process of institutional transformation and a contested field of political communication, identity, and public meaning-making.

Earlier this week, our Marie Curie Fellow, Dr. Carolyn Defrin, guided students through Portals to the Future, an artistic intervention and exhibition exploring new perspectives on migration, borders, and coexistence.

Developed in collaboration with people living and working across borders, the project transforms everyday doorways throughout Graz into portals to immersive audio experiences. The exhibition features 32 artworks created with participants from Europe, Africa, and the Americas, inviting visitors to imagine futures shaped by care, connection, and solidarity.

As part of the event, Dr. Defrin also gave a lecture titled “How do we get to humane migration futures?”, offering further insights into the ideas behind the exhibition and the role of imagination in shaping more humane migration futures.

The evening concluded with our very first Happy Hour, bringing together students, staff, and researchers for informal networking and exchange in a relaxed atmosphere. 🥂✨

WELCOME EVENT & GRADUATION CEREMONY ✨

On October 2, 2026, the Graz School of Interdisciplinary Transnational Studies (GITS) and Southeast European History and Anthropology (SEEHA) hosted an official Welcome Event for the new generation of students of the Joint Master’s Programme in Southeast European Studies (MA.SEES), the Arqus Joint Master’s Programme in European Studies, and the PhD Programme in Law and Politics, together with the Graduation Ceremony for MA.SEES students who graduated over the previous year.

The event featured a keynote speech by Prof. Vesna Pusić, former Deputy Prime Minister of Croatia and former Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, as well as contributions from Vice-Rector for Internationalisation Prof. Dr. Şebnem Bahadır-Berzig and GEWI Vice-Dean Prof. Dr. Margit Linder.

A special congratulations goes to Anna-Maria Takaliou, who was awarded the 2026 MA.SEES Best Thesis Award in recognition of her outstanding academic achievement! 🎉

It was a wonderful occasion to welcome our new students, celebrate the achievements of our graduates, and bring together our academic community. Congratulations to all our graduates, and a warm welcome to our new students! 🥳

"Portals to the Future is a citywide artistic intervention and exhibition exploring how we might imagine more humane futures for migration. Developed by artist-researcher Carolyn Defrin, the project brings together two interconnected works created in dialogue with people living and working across border contemporarys.
Throughout Graz, subtle interventions transform everyday doorways into portals to immersive audio experiences. Originally developed in Samos, Greece, these sound works invite visitors to pause, listen, and step into speculative futures shaped by care, connection, repair, and coexistence.
The journey culminates in an exhibition of thirty-two artworks created with participants from Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Together, the works explore how imagination itself can become a civic practice.
The program also includes a public walking tour and a conversation with members of the NOMIS research project Elastic Borders: Rethinking the Borders of the 21st Century, which is led by Bilgin Ayata at the University of Graz and reflects on this interdisciplinary collaboration.'
