Thank you .imhof for an inspiring lecture as part of our series at .

In “Designing for Earth by Living in Space. Architecture through the Lens of [Space] Extremes,” she presented projects from LIQUIFER and .design.extremes, showing how design research in extreme environments on Earth and in space can inform new architectural approaches.

The talk opened fascinating perspectives on how experimentation, technology, and design research can shape future environments.

This series explores the guiding question: How can architecture act as a change agent for urban climates? The theme frames the course offerings of the program between and .

Thank you for the engaging discussion and for sparking new ideas.

It was a great pleasure to introduce .imhof, who shared her work with LIQUIFER and .design.extremes as part of our lecture series at .

This series explores the guiding question: How can architecture act as a change agent for urban climates? The theme frames the course offerings of the program between and .

Her lecture, “Designing for Earth by Living in Space. Architecture through the Lens of [Space] Extremes,” offered insights into how extreme environments can inform architectural thinking across scales, from speculative research to applied design.

Students of the Future Cities Seminar presented their work as part of the Alpinestudio Global Campus, a collaboration between the and .

The seminar explores the guiding question:
How can architecture act as a change agent for urban climates?

Through research, mapping, and speculative design investigations, students examined how architectural thinking can respond to climate challenges and shape future urban environments, opening a dialogue between academic exploration and the cultural context of the Central Alpine region.

Thank you to for hosting this exchange of ideas.

FUTURE CITIES. Collective Intelligence. Shared Climates. - Seminar 2026
How can architecture act as a change agent for urban climates?

This shared guiding question connects all 2026 Alpinestudio Program courses. Across five modules, Sustainable, Resilient, Inclusive, Smart, and Transscalar Cities, students examine how planetary systems translate into locally grounded strategies for the Central Alpine Region. Human and artificial intelligence are combined to map, model, and envision speculative urban futures for Innsbruck.

ADAPTIVE TYPOLOGIES: Spatial Typologies as Change Agents – Seminar 2026
How can architecture act as a change agent for urban climates?

This shared guiding question unites the 2026 program. The course explores architectural typologies as instruments of transformation across scales, from territory to building. Through theory, precedent study, and design experimentation, students reinterpret spatial forms that respond to climatic pressures and develop adaptive strategies for alpine cities.

SUPERBLOCK. SUPERSPACE. – Design Studio 2026
How can architecture act as a change agent for urban climates?

This shared guiding question frames all 2026 Alpinestudio Program courses. In this studio, students investigate the Alpine Superblock in Innsbruck as a spatial framework to reorganize mobility, public space, and density. In collaboration with Studio LAUT, climate-adaptive urban quarters are developed that prioritize ecological performance and social life. Reduced car traffic, expanded pedestrian zones, and integrated green infrastructure become design tools to mitigate heat and transform streets into shared civic landscapes.

2026 BUILDING FUTURE SERIES

The Alpinestudio International Program opens to the public through the partnership between the University of Texas at Arlington and the University of Innsbruck, hosted at the Institute of Design and WEI SRAUM Designforum Tirol.

This semester is framed by one guiding question explored in seminar and studio:

How can architecture act as a change agent for urban climates?

Across Sustainable, Resilient, Inclusive, and Smart Cities, we approach architecture as a component of the urban ecosystem. Through lectures, workshops, and collaborative formats, the series connects climate, infrastructure, and design in a shared conversation.

Team Zooperblock – Rewilding the City
What if the Alpine Superblock wasn’t just for humans?

Team Zooperblock took the concept further—rewilding the urban grid to support both human and non-human life. Their proposal unseals paved surfaces to create lush, green corridors where water flows, species thrive, and people coexist with the urban ecosystem.

Ian Gillis breaking it down—zooming into one of the Alpine Superblock strategies during our final review.

10 teams, 2 universities, 5 urban quarters. The goal: rethinking Innsbruck through climate-fit design.

Big ideas in the making.
