Presenting the speakers: Alexander von Gabain

von Gabain obtained his Ph.D. In Molecular Biology at the University of Heidelberg, and held a post-doctorate position at Stanford University. In the 80’s-90’s he was professor at Umeå University and at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. Since 1993 he is the Chair of Microbiology at the University of Vienna. In this function, he was involved to build the Vienna Biocenter Research Institute. In 1998 he co-founded Intercell AG. He led the company until it was successfully located on the Vienna Stock Exchange, and continued as Supervisory Board (SB) when Intercell AG was merged into the trans-European biotech enterprise Valneva. He is Chairman of the business incubator of the Viennese Universities, INITs initiating more than 200 starts-ups. From 2008 until 2014, he was appointed as founding member of the Governing Board of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). In 2014, he returned as Deputy Vice-Chancellor to the Karolinska Institute. His passion for biomedical research and innovation has been acknowledged by industrial awards, academic prizes and honorary memberships, including the Swedish Royal Academy of Engineering Science.

Introducing the speakers: Heinrich Grabmayr

Heinrich Grabmayr is the co-founder of the biotech startup DEOXY Technologies. Heinrich received his PhD in biophysics from TU Munich, Germany, in 2013. After two short postdocs at Princeton University, U.S.A, and at LMU Munich, Germany, he and his colleagues launched DEOXY Technologies as a spin-off from the LMU Entrepreneurship Center. The team develops an ultra-sensitive technology that measures gene activity based on nanoscale fluorescent particles with applications in research and clinical diagnostics.

Presenting the speakers: Nadine Nehme

The scientist and medical researcher Nadine Nehme is Chief Science Officer of Medicus AI. She has 11 years of experience in genetics, genomics and immunology and 4 years of university teaching. Nadine holds a Ph.D. in molecular genetics from Louis Pasteur University, where she completed her studies under the supervision of Prof. Jules Hoffmann (Nobel Laureate in Medicine 2011), in Strasbourg France. She performed her post-doctoral studies at Necker Hospital, Paris, under the supervision of Prof. Alain Fischer, where she focused on immune diseases and their genetics.

Introducing the speakers: Andreas Grassauer.

Andreas Grassauer (Ph.D) is CEO and co-founder of Marinomed Biotech AG, a spin-off company of Veterinary University of Vienna, Austria. Together with other scientists he discovered the effectiveness of marine biopolymers against several respiratory viruses. He obtained his Ph.D in biotechnology from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna and did his post-doctoral training at the Medical University of Vienna. Andreas Grassauer is author of more than 20 scientific international peer reviewed publications, a number of communications to international conferences and a series of internationally validated patents. Besides his scientific achievements Andreas led the team that developed and brought to market several products that are now sold in more than 35 countries.

Introducing the speakers: Inma Sanchez Romero

Inma is an Engineer and PhD in Chemistry. She carried out her postdoctoral stage at IST Austria working in the field of synthetic biology. After her postdoc, she became Assistant Project Manager in the department of Research Services and Career Development at the University of Vienna. She will talk about her transition from academia to project management and how to highlight transferable skills acquired during the scientific career.

Making the transition from academia to industry? Turning data or methods into a patent or a successful start-up? The Science Industry Day 2017 titled “Create. Connect. Translate.” organized jointly by the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (IST Austria) and the Federation of Austrian Industries (IV) aims to tackle these questions. Renowned speakers will offer innovative and market-oriented perspectives, adding commercial value to scientific research. The afternoon program focuses on strengthening the business skills of young researchers. The evening event will give insights of our podium guests on this year’s topic in the panel discussion.

Introducing the speakers: Harold P. de Vladar

Harold is a cell biologist, statistical physicist and artist with a main focus on evolutionary biology. The IST Austria alumnus is founder and CSO of Ribbon Synthetic Biolabs, a startup company which aims to enable the growth of synthetic biology by automating the industrial production of DNA molecules of sub-genomic lengths. Besides, he is a researcher in the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and in Parmenides Foundation, near Munich.

Introducing the Speakers: Eva Gschaider-Reichhart

Eva has a background in Biotechnology. During her PhD studies at IST Austria, she has been involved in engineering different light-controlled receptor based systems and their application in different approaches. Some of the outcomes of these investigations resulted in patent applications. During her talk, Eva will give some examples of which kind of inventions can be protected and commercialised.

Introducing the Speakers: Vicent Botella

With a background in Physics, through the PhD and post-doc years Vicent travelled from Dynamical Systems to Neuroscience and still on to Machine Learning. Currently he is making the most out of his data analysis and Machine Learning skills working as a freelance consultant for companies in different industry sectors such as Healthcare, Medical Imaging and Travel Intelligence.
