🏂 Embrace the winter wonderland: Mastering the risk of avalanches during the Christmas holidays! 🌨️
As the festive season wraps the world in a snowy embrace, many of us are preparing for exciting outdoor winter adventures. ❄️ While the thrill of skiing, snowboarding and other snow sports is undeniable, it's also important to be aware of the potential avalanche danger that comes with it.
This Christmas, let's prioritise safety and share our knowledge to ensure a happy and safe winter experience. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:
1️⃣ Stay informed: Keep up to date with local avalanche forecasts and conditions. Knowledge is the best defence against potential risks, e.g. https://www.lawine-steiermark.at/
2️⃣ Equip yourself: Invest in appropriate avalanche safety equipment, including an avalanche transceiver, mobile phone, bivouac sack, probe and shovel. These devices are standard equipment and must be taken off-piste!
3️⃣ Training is important: consider taking part in an avalanche safety course. Knowledge of snowpack, terrain assessment and rescue techniques is absolutely essential in the backcountry.
4️⃣ Partnership system: Never venture into the winter wilderness alone. Always take a reliable partner with you and make sure that everyone in your group has the necessary equipment and is able to use it (companion rescue).
5️⃣ Pay attention to the terrain: Are there any warning signs? Are there any signs of wind (drifting snow)? If possible, stay below 30 degrees. If you cannot avoid 30 degree slopes, only ride on them one at a time!

Remember, the goal is to enjoy the winter season responsibly, making memories that last a lifetime. By prioritizing safety and spreading awareness, we can make this Christmas holiday both thrilling and secure. Learn more about disaster risk reduction at www.sds-unileoben.at.
