Asif Akbari's Master Thesis, "Spatial and Modal Patterns of Traffic Law Enforcement in Barcelona: Insights from Open Government Data," explored the spatial, temporal, and modal patterns of traffic law enforcement in Barcelona from a geospatial perspective.

Road safety is influenced not only by infrastructure and traffic conditions, but also by how and where traffic regulations are enforced. Asif's research therefore focused on a question that is often less visible in road safety research: ‘Where, when, and across which vehicle and violation categories are traffic infringements enforced’?

Using Barcelona's open government traffic infringement data from the first quarter of 2024, Asif analysed more than 260,000 traffic sanction records. The study combined GIS and statistical methods - including Network Kernel Density Estimation (NKDE), the Getis-Ord Gi* statistic, and Monte Carlo analysis - to identify spatial hotspots, examine temporal patterns, and explore differences across vehicle types and violation categories.

Time to Say Goodbye … and Hello!

With one tearing but one laughing eye, we say goodbye to our respected colleague Judith Grubinger-Preiner, who will leave the UNIGIS team in mid-August to pursue new endeavors as a high-school teacher. We are going to miss Judith and her warm and welcoming personality, and her tireless commitment to "her" UNIGIS students, whom she has taken care of for the last several years.

However, our laughing eye welcomes Dr. Christian Werner, who will take over Judith's role as tutor of the English-language UNIGIS program. As a member of the ZGIS mobility lab (), Christian will give us valuable support as a Master Thesis supervisor and in developing und updating our learning materials.

So, thank you, Judith - and good luck!
And welcome, Christian - nice to have you on board!

We warmly appreciate the dedicated contribution of Dr. Lorenz Wendt, remote sensing expert at the Z_GIS Department of Geoinformatics and Christian Doppler (CD) Laboratory for geospatial and EO-based humanitarian technologies (CDL GEOHUM), as a UNIGIS lecturer.
For five years, Lorenz was responsible for the Optional Module "Remote Sensing" as author and lecturer. In this module, Lorenz covered the complete remote sensing workflow, from data acquisition and processing to analysis and practical application.
He also lay the foundations for our recent Remote Sensing: Advanced module, which explores how cutting-edge remote sensing techniques transform Earth Observation data into meaningful insights.
During his time as a UNIGIS lecturer, more than 200 students chose Remote Sensing as their specialisation and benefited from Lorenz’s expertise. In addition, he supervised several master’s theses, supporting students in conducting high-quality research and applying remote sensing methods to real-world challenges.
We thank Lorenz for his outstanding commitment to UNIGIS, his dedication to student success, and his valuable contribution to advancing remote sensing education.

🌘 Heute Abend lohnt sich der Blick Richtung Westen - dort schiebt sich der Mond vor die Sonne. Bei uns in Salzburg ist es zwar keine vollständige Sonnenfinsternis, aber immerhin eine partielle mit 90%iger Verschattung der Sonne. Ihr Maximum erreicht sie kurz vor Sonnenuntergang, um 20:15 Uhr.

Damit wir trotz bergiger Landschaft auch wirklich ein Plätzchen mit freiem Blick auf den Sonnenuntergang finden, haben wir in der Shadowmap (https://shadowmap.org/de/) nachgeschaut. 🗺️

Shadowmap simuliert dabei den Sonnenstand für jeden Ort und jede Uhrzeit in 3D, und berücksichtigt dabei sogar Baum- und Gebäudeschatten.

👓 Und nicht vergessen: Bitte nie ohne geeigneten Augenschutz direkt in die Sonne schauen.

Willkommen, Karl-Heinz!

Wir freuen uns sehr, Ihnen Karl-Heinz Böhm, unseren neuen UNIGIS Lehrbeauftragten vorstellen zu dürfen. Karl-Heinz ist für das Modul "Räumliche Analysemethoden" im UNIGIS Master of Science Studium zuständig und hat Anfang Juli bereits mit der Modulbetreuung seiner ersten MSc Gruppe begonnen.

Nach seinem Informatik-Studium hat er sich zum Geoinformatiker weiterentwickelt und das UNIGIS professional & UNIGIS Master Studium erfolgreich abgeschlossen. Beruflich war er bis dato in einem IT-Dienstleistungsunternehmen in den Themengebieten Betriebssystementwicklung, Datenbanksysteme, Business-Intelligence-Lösungen und zuletzt besonders in Geodateninfrastrukturen unterwegs. Fachlicher Schwerpunkt war durchgehend die Analyse von umfangreichen, heterogenen Datenbeständen und der Aufbau von (Geo-)Informationsystemen zur Entscheidungsunterstützung besonders für Kunden im öffentlichen Sektor.

Wir freuen uns auf die Zusammenarbeit mit Karl-Heinz und sind dankbar, dass er seine Expertise bei UNIGIS einbringt!

ClubUNIGIS Get-together

Im Rahmen der AGIT Conference kamen Studierende, Lehrende und Alumni zu einer gemeinsamen Mittagspause zusammen. Das ClubUNIGIS Get-together bot eine willkommene Gelegenheit, sich abseits der sonst überwiegend digitalen Kommunikation auszutauschen.

Das UNIGIS-Team freute sich über zahlreiche bekannte Gesichter und anregende Gespräche. Ein weiterer Höhepunkt war die Würdigung der beiden langjährigen Modulbetreuer Florian Albrecht (Modul Räumliche Analysemethoden) und Lorenz Wendt (Modul Remote Sensing), die im Rahmen des Treffens noch einmal für ihr langjähriges Engagement ins Rampenlicht gerückt wurden.

What is the best way to assist data cleansing?
In a new UNIGIS blog article, Michael Demarmels presents a simple method for data cleansing in urban drainage networks based on a hybrid approach combining both automatic and manual work steps. Considerable efficiency gains were achieved without compromising on quality. Michael completed his UNIGIS Master studies in February 2026.
