Last excursion day to the geology of the Eastern Alps.

Final day of the excursion to risk and hazards in Alpine regions with our international group of students. We visited the Kitzsteinhorn - the top of Salzburg in the national park Hohe Tauern. The high altitude above 3000 m and its good accessibility makes it a perfect place for the open air lab installed and developed by since 2010. We learned about climate change in the Alps, permafrost development, monitoring, rock fall hazards and snow depots.
We enjoyed the great nature and views and some fun in the snow ❄️

In the third pillar (Computerlabs) of our new Bachelor’s program (starting Oct 1, 2026), the digital world becomes a tool for a safer future.

Simulation: Modeling natural processes such as avalanches, floods, erosion, and groundwater flow.

Data Power: Analyzing spatial data and complex time series to create accurate predictions.

Impact: Developing well-founded scenarios and forecasts for a climate-resilient society.

2. Säule/2nd pillar - RockLabs

Hast du eine Leidenschaft für Naturwissenschaften und würdest gern praktische Erfahrungen mit Laborarbeit und verschiedenen Analysemethoden sammeln? 🧪

Dann geht es nach dem Gelände direkt in die RockLabs (2. Säule). Hier gehen wir den Dingen wissenschaftlich auf den Grund.

Analytik: Mineralogische, physikalische und chemische Analysen von Gesteinen, Böden und Wässern.

Präzision: Erstellung von 3-D-Modellen des Untergrunds und geotechnische Prüfungen für Bauvorhaben.

Geschichte: Wasser und Gestein analytik, sowie Geochronologie zur Erfassung von Verweilzeiten und als Archiv der Erd- und Umweltgeschichte.

After the field, we head to the RockLabs. This is where we get to the scientific core of the system Earth.

Analytics: Mineralogical, physical, and chemical analyses of rocks, soils, and water.

Precision: Creating 3D subsurface models and geotechnical testing for engineering projects.

History: Water and rock analysis for geochronology to track residence times and use it as an archive of Earth’s history.

In der Säule FieldLabs unseres neuen Bachelorstudiums „Angewandte Umwelt- und Geowissenschaften“ (Start: 01.10.2026) tauschen wir den Hörsaal gegen das Gelände.

Das Labor in der Natur: Aufnahme und Interpretation von Gesteinen, Prozessen und Strukturen direkt in den Alpen.

Methoden: Anwendung moderner Messmethoden zur Erkundung von Erdoberfläche und Untergrund.

Fokus: Analyse von Erdoberflächenprozessen und deren Wechselwirkungen mit Atmosphäre, Hydrosphäre und Biosphäre.

The natural lab: Recording and interpreting rocks, processes, and structures in the Alps.

Methods: Using modern measurement techniques to explore the Earth’s surface and subsurface.

Focus: Scientific analysis of Earth surface processes and their interaction with the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere.

Last week our students learned the geological units and structures of the Eastern Alps during a 2 days field trip with and Christoph von Hagke. Weather conditions were excellent in the beautiful landscape around Salzburg.

Drunken forests and earth flows in the mist 🌫️ 🌁. We visited the landslides and earth flows in the "Gschliefgraben" near Gmunden, one of the historically best documented (and now best monitored) dramatic earth flows in the Eastern Alps - in day 2 of the excursion to "risk and hazards in Alpine regions". This area is also a geosite, and a unique bio-habitat and a remarkable example from a forestry perspective.
