Congratulations to our students, alumni and faculty on their recent achievements! 🎉🙌

Lorena Mantl, a student in the Art and Design Teacher Education program, won the the audience award of the Ö1 Talent Scholarship which secures her free participation in the “Artist Statement” as part of the Parallel Vienna 2027 art fair.

Composer Emma Ebmeyer received the Music Scholarship by Land Salzburg to work on her project which connects electronic music with fencing.

Germán Hernández Tovar, a master's student in wind orchestra conducting, won first prize, the Audience Award, and the Musicians' Award at the 1st WASBE International Conductors Competition in Rio de Janeiro.

Soprano Emma Kindinger won the Musical Advancement Award Youth at DEBUT 2026.

Alexander Umundum, a recorder player in the Pre-College program, won 2nd prize in the 12–16 age group at the Open Recorder Days in Amsterdam. He also won 1st prize with the Pre-College recorder quartet “Pre4Corder.”

Dreier Schieh Duo won the Förderpreis at the Hugo-Wolf-Akademie International Art Song Competition.

Markus Obereder, senior lecturer in conducting, choral conducting, and ensemble conducting, is taking over as artistic director of the Heinrich Schütz Ensemble in Bavaria.

Compositions by our student Dojin Jang won 2nd Prize in the York Impact Accelerator Fund (YIAF) Project Composition Competition and a 1st Prize at the Busan International Music Festival Composition Competition in Korea.

Kinga Tóth, a doctoral candidate at the interuniversity doctoral program „Kulturen im Wandel“ (Wissenschaft & Kunst), was awarded the Kelag Prize at the 50th German-Language Literature Days.

Tin Blümke, Nina Dalbazi, Anastasiia Larina, Sophie León Pellegrin, Salome Roithinger, Alexandra Leonie Kronberger & Rosemary Kilima (current students and graduates of the Master’s program in Applied Theater) were selected for the City of Salzburg’s new ZWISCHENSPIEL program and will be able to use residents’ rooms in the former Hellbrunn senior living facility for artistic projects.

What started with a one-time masterclass last year, has turned into a long-time commitment to teaching the next generation. This week, we officially welcome maestro Christian Thielemann as professor for orchestral conducting at Universität Mozarteum 🎶

To celebrate the occasion, he will lead our Symphony Orchestra at Dom zu Salzburg for a performance of Bruckner’s 7th Symphony.

What a way to start the new semester!
Yesterday, we all got together in our foyer to celebrate the start of a new study year, welcome our new professors and introduce some of the projects we’ve been working on and that will be rolling out the coming months.
We were also finally able to welcome Maria Kalesnikava to Universität Mozarteum and award her the honorary professorship, that we decided on four years ago, while she was imprisoned for her fight for freedom in Belarus. Her inspiring words and story have moved us all and we are grateful, that she will be staying with us in Salzburg to write her dissertation, where she will research the connection between music and political power.

We mourn the loss of one of the most influential figures at our university and, in particular, in the Department of Opera and Music Theater. On September 24, 2026, the renowned conductor, passionate educator, and professor emeritus Josef Wallnig passed away at the age of 80. With his passing, the music world and our academic community have lost a widely esteemed ambassador of the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Born in Salzburg in 1946, Josef Wallnig remained closely connected to the Mozarteum University throughout his life. After studying piano, composition, and conducting - and earning a doctorate in law - his artistic career took him to the Vienna State Opera and the Salzburg Festival, among other venues. In 1980, he was appointed professor at Mozarteum University.

For decades, he shaped generations of young artists. As head of the departments of voice and musical theater performance, as vice rector, and especially as the founder and director of the Mozart Opera Institute, through which he set international standards in the practical research and interpretation of Mozart’s operatic works.

In addition to his extraordinary expertise, his students especially valued his humanity, warmth, and enthusiasm. His legacy will live on in the many artists he has influenced. We will always remember him with gratitude and respect.

Our X-Reality Lab is officially open! 🎉
At the Staging Realities Festival, visitors were able to experience the whole building with different interactive installations, in collaboration with Schmiede and Ars Electronica.
In the coming days we get to welcome the first students for our newest study programme "Immersive Arts and Digital Narratives" where they will be able to experiment within the X-Reality Lab and all the technological opportunities it provides to create art.

Congratulations to Lea Oltmanns for winning the A⁴ - Austrian Art Alumni Award 2026 🎉

Lea, who is a directing graduate of Thomas-Bernhard-Institut was honored for her theater project “Gossipgirls”, which focuses on gossip and informal communication networks as historical and contemporary spaces of solidarity, trust, and knowledge exchange among FLINTA people*. Through this project, Oltmanns examines a form of communication that is often devalued and explores its social and political significance.

We can’t wait to see how she will further develop this project!

The A⁴ – Austrian Art Alumni Award was first presented in 2025 and is sponsored by the Federal Ministry for Women, Science, and Research Bundesministerium für Frauen, Wissenschaft und Forschung in collaboration with the six public Austrian art universities. The program’s goal is to support outstanding graduates as they transition from their studies to an independent artistic practice.
Each of the six award recipients will receive a grant of 24.000 euros over a period of twelve months. This will enable them to carry out the artistic projects they submitted as part of their applications and to further develop their artistic work.
