I am very pleased to announce that, for the first time, Eurasia Pacific Uninet is funding my work in Armenia.
The Armenian-Austrian project, the Arakelots Autumn School 2026, "Documentation, Monitoring, Preservation and Protection of Armenian Monuments," has been fully approved.

The autumn school will take place from October 22nd to 27th in Arakelots, in cooperation with Eurasia Pacific Uninet partners in Austria: the University of Salzburg, the Vienna University of Technology, and the University for Continuing Education Krems; and in Armenia: Yerevan State University and its branch in Ijevan. Together, experts from Austria and Armenia will work with students from Salzburg and Armenia on the 7 Most Endangered Monument of 2025, Arakelots Monastery and Settlement.

This represents another very important step in raising awareness, reaching out to civil society, and building capacity within the Arakelots project.

CAVE: both for students from Ijevan and from Salzburg - there is still time to apply for participation!

On April 17, an international symposium dedicated to the Arakelots Monastery and Settlement was held at the Ijevan Branch of Yerevan State University on the occasion of the official visit by a delegation from Europa Nostra and the European Investment Bank Institute.

At this symposium, the nominator of Arakelots and head of the Arakelots project based at the University of Salzburg, J. Dum-Tragut, presented Arakelots, the challenges of research and preservation, but also her visions and plans for its revitalization, conservation, and protection, involving the local population.
The interdisciplinary Arakelots team included H. Abrahamyan, head of the archaeological campaign in Arakelots, , who presented the initial findings of the ongoing excavation; A. Papoyan, fresco restoration specialist, who provided a fascinating introduction to the wall paintings in the monastery church of Arakelots; G. Harutyunyan, who premiered his wonderful video on Arakelots; and V. Fraga-Prol, Advocacy Officer at Europa Nostra, who introduced the 7 Most Endangered Program.
The symposium was attended by numerous students, the rector of Ijevan University, the deputy governor of Tavush Province, representatives of the Ijevan regional administration, as well as the head of the Tavush diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

"There is no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing"
Well, that's true, but to have archaeological excavations under such weather conditions - rain, cold temperatures - is somewhat different and I really would like to express my sincere gratitude to my team and the villagers for their perseverance and dedication.

I’m so excited:
we’re kicking off our first excavations at Arakelots Monastery on April 8 (through April 23), and the Arakelots team includes Roman, a young archaeologist from the University of Salzburg. We’re looking forward to this adventure, and to finally getting the 2025 “7 Most Endangered Sites” project at Arakelots Monastery and Settlement properly underway! By the way, guests and volunteers are always welcome!
