For the first time, I am organizing a concert at the Arakelots Monastery as part of the Arakelots Monastery and Settlement project. Not only exploring this forgotten monastery complex in depth, but also awakening it from its slumber is part of my revitalization efforts. Arakelots is set to become a gathering place for spiritual, musical, and traditional events, as well as for workshops and heritage schools. The concert on October 25 will be performed by the wonderful Shushiki Band , who will immerse Arakelots in a special atmosphere with their clear, heavenly voices and traditional songs.

I cordially invite everyone who would like to take a short hike this Sunday from the village of Acharkut to the Arakelots Monastery (about 20 minutes) and enjoy this concert. You might want to bring a seat pad or small blanket.

P.S.: The concert is also part of the Armenian-Austrian Autumn School, and all 20 participants of the Fall School from Armenia and Austria will be in attendance...

The preparations for our Armenian-Austrian autumn school in Arakelots Monastery and Settlement are now in full swing.

To prepare the curriculum and teaching materials, my dear colleague Haykuhi Muradyan, —CI of Interdisciplinary Armenian Cultural Heritage Studies "iachs", co-coordinator of the Eurasia-Pacific-Uninvet project "Arakelots" and member of the "Arakelots team" —came to Salzburg for a week.
We met in advance with participating students (Anna, Michael, James, and Alexander) and faculty from the University of Salzburg (GIS - Manfred) , as well as with instructors from the University of Krems (Cultural property protection - Anna) and Technical University of Vienna (Architecture, Building archaeology - Michael & Irene).

Obviously, this will be a very friendly and hopefully adventurous autumn school in the dense forest surrounding Arakelots—we are ready!

Preparing for our Armenian-Austrian Autumn School in Arakelots Monastery and Settlement, October 22-27, 2026. In cooperation with Yerevan State ԵՊՀ - Yerevan State University, Ijevan Branch of Yerevan State University ԵՊՀ Իջևանի մասնաճյուղ - YSUIB and the Interdisciplinary Armenian Cultural Heritage Studies "iachs", and financially support by Eurasia Pacific Uninet.

We are looking forward to welcoming students from the University of Salzburg, the ԵՊՀ Իջևանի մասնաճյուղ - YSUIB and of the National University of Architecture and Construction NUACA, as well as teaching staff from the University of Salzburg, the Technical University of Vienna and of the University of Continuing Education Krems.

We are always happy to welcome interested guests, join us for the adventure of learning and working interdisciplinarily and of the unique medival experience in Arakelots monastery and settlement.

Tagung in Salzburg!!!!

Armenisches Christentum im Nahen Osten
- Geschichte, Gegenwart, Zukunft"
21. bis 22. September 2026

Die Armenische Kirche spielt weit über ihr Kernland Armenien hinaus im gesamten Nahen Osten eine bedeutende Rolle. Zugleich ist diese Kirche - wie alle Kirchen - in Bedrängnis und sieht sich vor großen Herausforderungen.
Wir wollen nach Syrien, ins Heilige Land oder auch in die
Türkei blicken und nehmen auch die Armenier in Österreich in unser Programm mit hinein. Dazu kommen wie gewohnt spannende Einblicke in die Arbeit der ICO im gesamten Nahen Osten, ein Bericht von unserer Partnerorganisation Oeuvre d'Orient sowie Gottesdienste, die das Programm abrunden. Die Tagung wird von der ICO gemeinsam mit der Salzburger PRO ORIENTE-Sektion und dem Zentrum zur Erforschung des christlichen Ostens er Universität Salzburg, Abteilung Armenische Studien, veranstaltet.

Am Dienstag werde ich auch einen kurzen Bericht über die Lage des armenischen Kulturerbes im armenisch-aserbaidschanischen Grenzgebiet sowie in Karabach geben.

Panel: History of Veterinary Pharmacy and Horse medicine

I am particularly pleased, excited, and very proud that we will present our research on the transfer of knowledge in (human and) equine medicine during the medieval period east of Byzantium at the conference.

As a matter of fact, we will be very well represented, presenting the results of our extensive research at the the Centre for the Study of the Christian East and the Armenian Studies Division in several talks and poster. These include my own keynote lecture, as well as contributions by the conference organiser and my doctoral student, Dr. Heinrich evanzin, who does not work on horses but also researches Armenian medicine, in particular pharmacology. Our interdisciplinary examination of Armenian, Arabic, and Georgian texts, studied in conjunction with ancient Greek as well as Persian and Indian sources and extending to early modern Ottoman materials, highlights the importance of our interdisciplinary research. It also places the history of Armenian medicine in a new light and is currently unparalleled worldwide.
