CEU Jewish Studies

CEU Jewish Studies Teaching and learning about Jewish history and culture in the heart of Europe, at CEU Vienna.

The CEU Jewish Studies Program offers an MA specialization that covers the wide expanse of Jewish culture, society and history, with a special emphasis on the ramified Jewish experience in Central and Eastern Europe from early modern times to the present. Together with our partners in Vienna and Budapest, we organize public lectures, conferences, field trips and walking tours, and bring together researchers and scholars of Central European Jewry to present the newest research in the field.

📢 Call for Papers: JLA International 2027 "Inside/Outside: Jews, Law, and Jewish Law"
📍 University of Vienna
🗓️ 19–21 July 2027
Delighted to be on the organising committee for next year's Jewish Law Association international conference. We invite proposals engaging with Jewish law's boundaries and entanglements – legal pluralism, the limits of law, questions of universality and exclusivity, and Jewish law's impact on non-Jewish legal systems – across any period, geography, or discipline.
⏰ Deadline: 9 October 2026
Some funding available for graduate students.
Full CfP: below.

Jewish law is often presented as a comprehensive, self-contained, and all-encompassing legal system. Yet beyond the classics on the bookshelf and in the classroom, lived experience and theoretical inquiry challenge this conception. To explore these tensions and their implications, the Jewish Law Ass...

On May 31-June 2, 2026, the CEU Jewish Studies Program marked its 25th anniversary with an international conference: Jewish Studies at a Crossroads: Central Europe and Beyond. Forty scholars, including many alumni of the CEU Jewish Studies program, came together to present their latest research and reflect on past developments, current challenges, and future directions in the field. By bringing together students, researchers, museum directors, philanthropists and other stakeholders, the conference celebrated this interdisciplinary program, which has played a vital role in shaping Jewish Studies in Central Europe since the fall of communism. The conference also focused on strategies for institutional collaboration, with the aim of opening new possibilities and perspectives for future students and for the field in general. We are grateful to CEU, the European Association for Jewish Studies (EAJS), Stadt Wien Kultur, the Knapp Family Foundation, and the Salo W. and Jeanette M. Baron Foundation for their generous support.

Yesterday evening, at the Jüdisches Museum Wien, Lisa Silverman presented her groundbreaking new book, "The Postwar Antisemite: Culture and Complicity after the Holocaust," in conversation with Éva Kovács (Wiener Wiesenthal Institut für Holocaust Studien - VWI) and Michael L. Miller (CEU). Examining postwar trials, films and texts, Lisa brilliantly showed how Austrians, Germans, and others used the figure of the Antisemite as a way to come to terms with their altered circumstances and to shape new national self-understandings.
