"My Mother Often Told Me": Dutch Sephardi Postmemory and the 1635 Yom Kippur Raid of the Madrid Inquisition

In an article just published in the review Jewish Social Studies, CJS faculty member Carsten Wilke researches a Sephardi oral tradition that transmitted the memory of Inquisitorial persecution over the course of more than a century. In 1736, the Amsterdam Jewish polemicist Abraham Gómez Silveyra looked back at the most incisive moment in his family history: his ancestors were secretly celebrating the eve of Yom Kippur in Madrid when armed guards raided their house on orders of the Holy Office. Based on trial records, Wilke describes the crypto-Jewish circle that was arrested in 1635, and he shows that Gómez Silveyra reflected his mother’s traumatic experience in theological writings that already belong to the early Enlightenment.

A few impressions from our Jewish Studies Walking Tour through Vienna! From Judenplatz to Leopoldstadt, we explored the city’s Jewish history across the centuries and reflected on Jewish life in Vienna, past and present.

“Jewish Memory” explores how remembrance shapes Jewish religious and cultural traditions, from the biblical imperative zakhor, “remember!,” and its expression in texts and rituals to modern commemorative cultures. The course examines individual, communal, and official forms of memory, with a focus on Holocaust remembrance and its global reception.
