The Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot is an international moot court competition.

Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot is an international moot court competition, which focuses on international commercial law and arbitration. University of Helsinki has attended the competition since year 2004. The participation of the team is coordinated by COMI (University of Helsinki Conflict Management Institute) and supported by major Finnish law firms, which also organize a worksh

Participating in the 23rd Willem C. Vis East International Arbitration Moot in Hong Kong was an incredible experience.

Competing against exceptionally talented teams from around the world and pleading before diverse and highly experienced arbitrators was an experience we will never forget.

We also feel incredibly fortunate to have met arbitration practitioners from across the globe and to represent Finland in such an international setting.

Beyond the hearing rooms, Hong Kong added its own spark to the experience. Exploring the city together made everything even more memorable.

Last week, our team attended our very first pre-moot in Düsseldorf. 🇩🇪 It was an exciting and intense experience, as it marked the first time we had the opportunity to test our arguments in a real pleading setting against other teams. We gained valuable insight into the strengths and weaknesses of our case. Overall, the experience marked a significant milestone in our Vis Moot journey. Thank you for the organizers and to our coach for guiding more or less nervous mooties in our first pre-moot. 🙏🏼

The wait is over! The problem for the 33rd Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot has finally been released and the University of Helsinki’s Vis Moot team couldn’t be more excited to dive in.

This year’s case centers on goods - plants used to produce vanilla. Intriguing, right? 🌱

The problem challenges teams to tackle issues such as:
a. the application of different versions of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) Rules,
b. disclosure obligations relating to third-party funding,
c. impediments beyond control under the CISG, and
d. the calculation of damages.

Now it’s time to roll up our sleeves and get to work under the guidance of our amazing coaches! 💪

Yesterday, our amazing coaches arranged a really fun day for us! We started off with 👩‍💻 workshops at Roschier, covering arbitration and memo writing.
🍕🎲🥂 After that, we headed to Dottir for a pizza night filled with games, laughter, and great company!

🚀 We advanced to the elimination rounds, reaching the Round of 64 (Amanda, Elsa, and Tuukka had the honor of taking our team further than Helsinki has gone in recent years) against the fantastic Deakin Law School Vis Moot Team, whom we congratulate on their progression to the Round of 8!

As the 32nd Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot and the 22nd Willem C. Vis East International Commercial Arbitration Moot have come to a close, The University of Helsinki’s Vis Moot Team proudly reflects on an incredible experience — both personally and professionally.

We are especially grateful for the opportunity to work with the The Finland Arbitration Institute (FAI) Arbitration Rules and the CISG, which deepened our understanding and advocacy skills in ways we’ll carry with us far beyond this competition.

Half of our team also had the opportunity to travel to Hong Kong, where Anni, Sakari, and Sara had the honor of pleading before esteemed international tribunals. They had a unique opportunity to connect with people from around the world, and representing the University of Helsinki in Hong Kong was a particularly special highlight during the FAI Vis Moot year!🇫🇮
