Each month, we will focus on achieving a deeper understanding of one essential application document in order to help you craft your application to a US college or university to the best of your ability. Stay tuned as we share important insights from applicants, students, and admissions officers at US institutions of higher education.
This month we are talking about standardized tests! What is a standardized test, and which standardized tests are typically required to apply to US universities? A standardized test is a uniform exam that is administered and scored in a consistent manner. Why are standardized tests important? Standardized tests are used to support admissions decisions because they provide a common, objective measurement to compare the academic abilities of applicants across educational backgrounds. There are all kinds of standardized tests, but in the following weeks we will focus on understanding three major standardized tests in more depth: the SAT for undergraduate admissions, the GRE for graduate admissions, and the TOEFL test for international students who wish to attend a US university.
