Fantastic end of a well-organised and interesting Symposium of the Austrian Society for Toxicology (ASTOX) held this year at BOKU - Universität für Bodenkultur Wien (Muthgasse).

Our first year DoSChem PhD-student Magdalena Pöchhacker won the first poster prize for her poster entitled "Discovery, mode of action & biosynthesis of marine biotoxins".

Our PostDoc Dr. Francesco Crudo followed with the second poster prize with his poster "The Alternaria mycotoxin alternariol suppresses the DNA damage-induced phosphorylation of the histone H2AX".

Congrats to both of you and keep up the good work.

Finally, thanks to Franz Berthiller the current ASTOX-Chair for the organisation of this symposium.

An exciting week lies behind us, there are several indications now that the fish killings in the river “Oder” at the boarder of Germany and Poland were caused by the microalga “Prymnesium parvum”, the alga was identified by light microscopy in the water by colleagues from the IGB, the respective toxins called “prymnesins” were identified by us (Elisabeth Varga with the help of the MassSpecCenter of the Faculty) and data from the European satellite “Copernicus Satelliten Sentinel 2” confirm the massive algal bloom.

Of course these are sad circumstances and dramatic events for the affected areas, but we are proud and glad that we could contribute to shed some light on the massive fish killings. It is not over yet and there is a lot of work still to do in the upcoming weeks.

Proud to present the first Universität Wien publication of our REWIRE-postdoctoral researcher Natalia Castejón. https://rewire.univie.ac.at/fellows/castejon-natalia/

She investigated the fatty acid composition and cytotoxic activity of lipid extracts from the microalgae Nannochloropsis gaditana. This work was published in the MDPI-Journal molecules and can be accessed here: https://www.mdpi.com/1420-3049/27/12/3710/htm

Congrats! And we are looking forward to your next results.

In the next weeks, we will post some updates of journal articles published in the last half a year. We want to start with two collaborations projects of the Department:

1) With among others the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz about the ALK tyrosine kinase inhibitor “crizotinib” published in the MDPI-journal “Pharmaceuticals”:
https://www.mdpi.com/1424-8247/14/11/1126/htm

2) With our colleagues from the Department of Analytical Chemistry who developed a new software-tool called “PeakBot” for the chromatographic peak picking published in Bioinformatics: https://academic.oup.com/bioinformatics/article/38/13/3422/6590644?login=false
