JASEC - TU Wien Interdisciplinary support unit for the coordination of scientific exchange between the faculties of

The Japan Austria Science Exchange Center (JASEC) coordinates the scientific cooperation between all faculties of TU Wien and Japanese partner institutions. In addition to fostering the mobility of researchers and teaching staff JASEC also supports students of both countries in the framework of university partnerships. The difference in language, mentality and curricula are sometimes barriers for

an active exchange. However, the long-lasting and very successful cooperation of the TU Wien with Japanese partner institutions provides evidence that these barriers can be overcome. Since the first agreement with the University of Tokyo was signed in 1981, TU Wien has continuously expanded its network to a total of 14 Japanese partner institutions.

🇯🇵 𝔽𝕣𝕠𝕞 𝕋𝕌 𝕎𝕚𝕖𝕟 𝕥𝕠 𝕋𝕠𝕜𝕪𝕠! 🗼

TU Wien student Markus shares his experience from his exchange semester at the 芝浦工業大学/Shibaura Institute of Technology:

💬 "Through the help of JASEC, I had the opportunity to study in Tokyo. It helped me grow academically and personally. Stepping out of your comfort zone is so important, and an exchange in Japan is the perfect way to do it. The rich culture and amazing food bring so much joy, and with JASEC’s support, the organizational hurdles were kept to a minimum. I highly recommend this experience!"

The Forschungsbereich für Verkehrsplanung und Verkehrstechnik invited to an incredibly insightful seminar featuring Prof. Kenichi Soga from UC Berkeley. As the Director of the Berkeley Center for Smart Infrastructure, Prof. Soga shared groundbreaking insights into how data-informed systems can help us tackle the dual challenges of infrastructure deterioration and climate change.
Traditional design methods often fall short when long-term user behaviors, technological shifts, and environmental demands evolve. Prof. Soga convincingly argued that the future lies in closing the gap between measured asset behavior and actual service delivery.

This cutting-edge research is a perfect example of how combining engineering innovation with smart technology strengthens a resilient society and enables effective risk management. By transforming static infrastructure into adaptable, learning systems, we can better protect our communities from cascading failures and the increasingly severe impacts of climate change.
A huge thank you to Prof. Soga for bringing these inspiring perspectives from UC Berkeley to TU Wien. Many thanks also to Bingyu Zhao for organizing this inspiring event.
