How can smaller and middle powers make multilateral diplomacy work when international institutions are under pressure?

On 10 October, around 30 students took part in the first-ever Foreign Policy Hackathon at the Vienna School of International Studies, organised in cooperation with the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs/Österreichisches Außenministerium.

Working in four teams, students explored the future of the OSCE, European security architecture, institutional reform at the United Nations and ways to advance its work on issues such as human rights, humanitarian aid, global health, climate and emerging technologies.

Guided by experienced mentors, they moved beyond analysing these challenges to develop concrete policy initiatives, test their feasibility and present their proposals to a panel of senior practitioners and academics. The format put their knowledge of international affairs into practice, tackling the kinds of complex questions diplomats face in their work.

The next step? Refining their ideas into diplomatic non-papers, which the teams will present at the Foreign Ministry in the coming weeks. A big thank you to everyone who helped make this first edition possible, and to our students for their thoughtful contributions.

How much of history comes down to chance? 🎲

Could the First World War have unfolded differently if Franz Ferdinand’s assassination had taken another turn? And how close did the world come to nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis?

In the latest episode of Was wir wissen, the podcast of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), hosts Francesca Grandolfo and Thomas Zauner explore these questions with historians Oliver Rathkolb (University of Vienna) and Tamara Scheer (University of Innsbruck), as well as Harald Edinger (Diplomatische Akademie Wien), an expert in International Relations.

Harald Edinger’s research focuses on International Relations theory, political psychology and Russian foreign and security policy. He brings his expertise to a discussion of how chance and contingency shape international affairs. For DA students interested in history, diplomacy and International Relations, this episode offers food for thought on how decisions and unexpected events can shape the course of history.

Our students joined the 30th anniversary events of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) in Vienna together with our Dean, Markus Kornprobst. They first visited the exhibition before attending the evening reception at Vienna City Hall.

A great opportunity to engage with the history of the Treaty and reflect on the continued importance of diplomacy, science and international cooperation in advancing nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.
