What does diplomatic autonomy look like in an increasingly polarised world?

In his recent public lecture, “Africa’s Push for Diplomatic Autonomy in the USA–Iran–Israeli Conflict,” Professor Jean-Emmanuel Pondi explored Africa’s evolving role in global geopolitics and the continent’s efforts to navigate complex international alignments on its own terms.

Jean-Emmanuel Pondi is President of The Pondi Foundation, non-resident faculty member at the Vienna School of International Studies since 2004, and Honorary Vice-Chancellor of The ICT University, Yaoundé.

For 30 years, the Europa-Forum Wachau has brought together voices from diplomacy, politics, business, and academia to discuss the future of Europe and regional cooperation. Through our new partnership with the Forum, DA students had the unique opportunity to take part in this year’s discussions on European sovereignty in an increasingly fragile world order 🇪🇺

Engaging directly with high-level debates on regional cooperation, European integration, and Ukraine’s reconstruction gave our students valuable insight into the challenges shaping today’s international landscape and the kind of dialogue future diplomats must be part of.

Students and alumni from the Diplomatische Akademie Wien joined the 2026 GLOBSEC Forum in Prague. The annual forum is one of Europe’s leading platforms for global security, diplomacy, and policy dialogue. 🌍

From security and defence to human rights, governance, and global cooperation, the Forum brought together voices shaping the future of international affairs. In this blog, Ilana reflects on a fast-paced but highly enriching week filled with institutional visits, cultural experiences, and new perspectives:

"The Baltic Sea Study Trip was inspiring and exactly the right choice if you are interested in or working on a thesis related to security and defence. Finland, Estonia and Latvia are highly underrated destinations with fascinating histories and complex security situations. It was a lot to visit these three beautiful countries in a week but the impression it left on me and the educational experiences we partook in will forever be ingrained on my mind. We met people working on important projects from many different governments and International Organizations that seek to develop or protect these three countries. Experiencing the cultures, sights, institutions and sauna were like my opinion of our Baltic Sea dip - it is very cool!"
