Wir sind zutiefst traurig über den Verlust unserer langjährigen Direktorin und Obmann-Stellvertreterin des Amerika-Instituts Frau Mag. Margarete Weissgärber, die am 30. Jänner 2025 nach kurzer, schwerer Krankheit verstorben ist. Sie hat unsere Arbeit und Werte über viele Jahrzehnte geprägt und alles zum Erfolg des Amerika-Instituts beigetragen.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of our long-time Director and Deputy Chairwoman of the AAIE, Margarete Weissgärber, who passed away after a short illness on January 30th, 2025. She has guided our work and values for so many years and has contributed everything for the success of our Austro-American Institute of Education.

My name is Alyona Freyak and I am proud to be part of the team at the Austro-American Institute of Education, where I have been working as an office- and project-manager since September 2024.
This work aligns with my lifelong passion for building international connections and creating opportunities for cultural exchange.

My journey in this field began at 16 when I spent a transformative year of my life as an exchange student in the USA.
That expanded my worldview and inspired me to pursue a career in international relations, with a special focus on economic development.

After earning a Master’s Degree in International Economics, I dedicated 14 years to advancing economic and international relations within my region in Ukraine, eventually becoming the head of the Department for Regional International Relations.

In addition to my enthusiasm for international collaboration, I am passionate about education and the English language, which led me to teach college students for six years, passing on my knowledge in international relations.

Originally from Ukraine, I relocated to Vienna in 2022, following the outbreak of the war. This transition marked a new chapter in my life, immersing myself in Austrian culture and dedicating two years to learning German.
Once I am settled into life in Vienna, my goal is to continue building intercultural connections and encouraging global understanding because I believe in a world where we can find common ground and work together for a future free of borders.

First field trip with to Dorfgastein! Enjoyed informative tours of the national park museum in Mittersill and the organic farm Schmaranzgut, rainy hikes, and beautiful nature. No storm could stop us! 😊

3/3 Since the founding of the Hope College Vienna Summer School program in 1956 by Dr. Paul Fried, who directed the program for its first 20 years, Hope has provided more than 4,000 American students the opportunity to study in Vienna, the most students from any college or university in the United States since the signing of the Austrian State Treaty in 1955. We pay tribute to Professors Stephen Hemenway, Brian T. Gibbs, Marla Lunderberg, Janis Gibbs, and Hope College for their decades of dedication to their students, international education, partnership with AAIE, and to providing such rich experiences to American students in Vienna and Central Europe. Doc, we are looking forward to welcoming you and your colleagues back to Vienna in 2024 and we salute you!!!
