FIMU presents one of our speakers 2019: Gabriel Yared
Versatile artist Gabriel Yared, with his elegant, sensual-emotional musical language, is one of the most sought-after film composers worldwide
Gabriel Yared was born in 1949 in Beirut, Lebanon, and lived there until the age of eighteen. He first came into contact with music at a very early age at school. He attended accordion and piano lessons. As a teenager, he began to study music theory and composition. At the tender age of fourteen, he became the organist at the university of his hometown. Nevertheless, Yared decided to study law after graduating from school.
In the following years Yared increasingly dedicated himself to his own compositions and wrote music for radio and TV. He met Jean-Luc Godard and made his debut as a film composer for his film SAUVE QUI PEUT (LA VIE) in 1980. Since then, he has set around 100 films to music for well-known directors such as Jean-Jacques Beineix, Robert Altman, Jean-Jacques Annaud, and Anthony Minghella. Among the well-known French films for which he wrote the film music are works such as BETTY BLUE - 37 DEGRÉE LE MATIN, CAMILLE CLAUDEL, L'AMANT, and COCO CHANEL & IGOR STRAVINSKY.
He made his international breakthrough with the film music for Anthony Minghella’s THE ENGLISH PATIENT in 1996. He won an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and a Grammy for his score. Since then, Yared has worked regularly in both the USA and Europe. For THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY (1999) and COLD MOUNTAIN (2003) respectively, he was nominated for another Oscar. In 2005, he wrote the music for Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s film DAS LEBEN DER ANDEREN, which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
Yared’s more recent works include the music for THE DEATH AND LIFE OF JOHN F. DONOVAN by Xavier Dolan, THE HAPPY PRINCE directed by Rupert Everett, and Rupert Gold’s film biography of Judy Garland, JUDY, with Renée Zellweger in the leading role.
Yared is founder and director of the Académie Pléiade, which supports talented young composers in the production and promotion of their works. In 2017, Yared was a jury member at the 70th Cannes Film Festival.
