Dear colleagues,

Our 2-year tenure as your representatives is almost over.

In the last two years, we have strived to meet your expectations as your representatives. We have participated in numerous conferences with university representatives, aiming to improve our doctoral programs, master's degrees, and postgraduate programs.

Additionally, we hope that by awarding the esteemed PhD Student of the Month award, we have highlighted the excellence of the postgraduate students at the Medical University of Vienna.

Furthermore, we hope you had a great time at the few get-togethers we organized, despite the limitations imposed by COVID restrictions.

On a more serious note, no one ran for office in the last elections for students' representatives (“ÖH-Wahl”) at the postgraduate level. Consequently, there will be no officially and directly elected students' representation for postgraduate degrees. As a result, the responsibilities that were previously held by the StV Postgrad will be transferred to the general students' representation of the ÖH Med Wien ("Universitätsvertretung"). They have recently decided to establish a department for postgraduate affairs (Dörte Symmank, Erdem Yildiz, Josef Yu), which will take over the duties of the StV Postgrad as of July 1, 2023.

Thank you for your trust!

Your StV Postgrad (until June 30, 2023)
Carina Borsch, Tobias Meischl, Dörte Symmank, Erdem Yildiz, Jakob Eichelter

[PhD Student of the Month - Gregor Heitzinger, June 2023]

We are honoured to present the PhD Student of the Month for June 2023, Gregor Heitzinger. He is enrolled in the UN094 programme "Vascular Biology" and works at the Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine II.

Gregor's main research interest is valvular heart disease. In particular, he has investigated improvements in risk-stratification and quantification of valvular regurgitant lesions in tricuspid and mitral valve disease. Recently, he also analyzed epidemiological aspects of tricuspid regurgitation and heart failure patients. The ultimate goal of Gregor's research is to provide a better and improved patient management in these vulnerable patients, including earlier decisions for interventions (either surgical or transcatheter-based), better quantification of valvular lesions that can often be very challenging in echocardiography and identification of patient cohorts at high risk of mortality.

Gregor's research efforts have already led to several publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, including first-author publications in "JACC - Advances" and the top-ranked journals "European Journal of Heart Failure" and "European Heart Journal - Cardiovascular Imaging". Congratulations!

[PhD Student of the Month - Katharina Pomej, May 2023]

With great pleasure, we present the PhD Student of the Month for May 2023, Katharina Pomej. She is enrolled in the UN790 programme “Clinical & Experimental Oncology” and works at the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Department of Medicine III.

Katharina investigates various aspects of systemic therapies in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (aHCC). While tyrosine kinase inhibitors used to be the backbone of systemic therapy for aHCC, the treatment landscape has recently changed with the approval of immune checkpoint inhibitor-based regimens, which became the new standard first-line systemic therapy. In her thesis project, Katharina investigates the effects of different prognostic parameters on the risk of vascular complications and worse outcome in patients treated with tyrosine kinase inhibitors. Currently, her research group evaluates the safety, feasibility and efficacy of f***l microbiota transplant from super-donors to patients with aHCC treated with checkpoint inhibitors in a recently initiated phase IIa pilot study. Ultimately, these studies aim to improve the outcome and identify novel treatment strategies in patients with aHCC.

Katharina's research efforts have already led to several publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, amongst these first author publications the top-ranked journals "Cancers" and "Liver International", as well as in "Digestive and Liver Disease", "Journal of Hepatocellular Carcinoma", "ESMO Open" and "PLOS ONE". Congratulations!

[PhD Student of the Month - Mathias Jachs, April 2023]

We proudly present the PhD Student of the Month for April 2023, Mathias Jachs, who is enrolled in the N790 programme "Clinical Endocrinology, Metabolism and Nutrition" and works at the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Department of Medicine III.

Mathias investigates various aspects of portal hypertension, including diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. Within the scope of his thesis project, he focusses on prognostically relevant immunomodulatory effects of non-selective betablockers, which are widely used in portal hypertension to prevent hepatic decompensation.

Novel non-invasive diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers that may facilitate early diagnosis and treatment of portal hypertension are another of Mathias' research areas. Together with his supervisor Mattias Mandorfer, he coordinates an international project to further refine the non-invasive diagnosis and prognosis of portal hypertension using spleen stiffness measurements. Eventually, the ultimate goal of Mathias' research is to promote the understanding of non-invasive diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in portal hypertension and facilitate patient-centered, individualized medicine in the field.

Mathias' research efforts have already led to numerous publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, amongst these first-author publications in the top-ranked journals "Gut", "Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics" and "Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology". Congratulations!

[PhD Student of the Month - Marianne Graninger, March 2023]

We are honoured to present the PhD Student of the Month for March 2023, Marianne Graninger. She is enrolled in the N790 programme Clinical Neurosciences (CLINS) and works at the Center for Virology.

Marianne's research focuses on nervous system affections in latent and persistent viral infections. Particularly, this includes herpesvirus infections but also SARS-CoV-2 infections and Long COVID. Currently, her research group aims to identify the role of natural killer (NK) cells in the defense and pathogenesis of neurological long-term sequelae in latent viral infections, mainly by analysis of genetic factors influencing the individual NK cell activity. They also investigate how the interplay of multiple viral infections might prevent or enhance neurological symptoms. These studies might lead to the identification of risk factors and potential treatment targets for neurological (long-term) complications of viral infections.

Marianne's research efforts have already led to several publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, amongst these first-author publications in the top-ranked journals "Journal of Clinical Virology", "Allergy", "Microbiology Spectrum" and "Frontiers in Immunology". Congratulations!

[PhD Student of the Month - Lukas Hartl, February 2023]

With great pleasure, we present the PhD Student of the Month for February 2023, Lukas Hartl. He is enrolled in the N790 programme "Clinical Endocrinology, Metabolism and Nutrition" and works under the supervision of Thomas Reiberger at the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Department of Medicine III.

In his thesis project, Lukas investigates humoral and endocrine abnormalities in patients with advanced chronic liver disease. These patients do not only have increased intrahepatic vascular resistance due to scarring of the liver tissue ("liver cirrhosis"), but also develop complex changes in a variety of regulatory mechanisms, leading to portal hypertension and a hyperdynamic circulatory state. The goal of Lukas' thesis project is to characterize hormonal abnormalities in patients with different stages of advanced chronic liver disease in order to provide a better understanding for the dysregulations of endocrine systems on both an intrahepatic and systemic level. Potentially, patient populations might be identified who could particularly benefit from pharmaceutical interventions. While studies on the classical and alternative renin-angiotensin systems, proBNP and arginine-vasopressin have already been published, manuscripts investigating the pituitary-adrenal axis and thyroid hormones are currently in preparation. Beside his thesis project, Lukas has published various manuscripts on COVID-19 and liver disease.

In total, Lukas' research efforts have already led to a high number of publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, amongst these first-author publications in the top-ranked journals "Hepatology", "Liver International", "Hepatology International" and "Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology". Congratulations!

[PhD Student of the Month - Christian Lang, January 2023]

We proudly present the PhD Student of the Month for January 2023, Christian Lang, who is enrolled in the N094 programme "Malignant Diseases" and works at the Division of Pulmonology, Department of Medicine II.

Christian's research is focused on thoracic malignancies which are among the most common and deadly cancers worldwide. Therapeutic options have been very limited for many years but recently there has been a surge in new therapy-relevant findings thanks to an ever-improving biological-oncological understanding. Christian and his multidisciplinary research group aim to translate these findings from basic research into clinically relevant contexts, thereby striving to improve the future management of thoracic cancer patients. Particularly, the group investigates novel biomarkers and therapeutically relevant molecules in a wide range of thoracic-malignancies.

Christian's research efforts have already led to several publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, amongst these first-author publications in the top-ranked journals "European Respiratory Journal" and "ESMO Open" as well as in "Lung Cancer", the "Journal of Thoracic Disease" and the "Journal of Visualized Surgery". Congratulations!
