Can two nearly identical molecules smell completely different?
“Forever Solutions” by artist Matthias Amsler , developed in dialogue with Wolfgang Kroutil from the University of Graz, explores how tiny differences in molecular structure can shape the way we perceive the world.
The installation is activated by the scents of D- and L-limonene. Although the molecules share the same chemical composition, their mirrored structures create entirely different sensory experiences: one smells like citrus, the other like pine.
Created in collaboration with researchers from BOKU University, TU Wien, the University of Vienna, acib, and the Cluster of Excellence Circular Bioengineering, the work translates research on circular systems and biotechnology into an immersive artistic experience.
“Forever Solutions” is part of “Waste is a Myth”, the exhibition accompanying the BOKU Future Conference 2026.
