The key objective of the Department of Building Construction is to technically support the conceptual and formal renewal of architecture as propelled in the design studios through teaching and research. Building Construction is integrative – that means it is taught as an embedded aspect of architectural design. In this way students acquire technical expertise parallel to design competence.

Biodesign meets Bioengineering ✨🌿

Our visit to the Institute of Materials Chemistry & Research at the University of Vienna sparked discussions about bio-based materials, fabrication, and future possibilities between science and design. Special thanks to Alexander Bismarck and the Polymer and Composite Engineering team for welcoming us and sharing their inspiring work and insights.

Fast paced, intense and over before we knew it! The AI Aided Biomimetic Design Workshop has come to an end.

Over the past days we researched, explored, tested and finalized our designed systems. Congratulations to all participating students and many thanks to the contributing institutions and researchers!

First day is wrapped! The Biomimetic Design with AI Tools BIP Workshop in Ankara officially kicked off yesterday. ✨🌿

The process started with icebreakers and the first feedback sessions, diving straight into the natural growth patterns shaping spatial structures and AI-supported computational design.

The ideas are already taking shape and we are just getting started. Fabrication begins in the upcoming days, leading up to a final presentation- we will be sharing results soon! 🤖

Artificial Intelligence Aided Biomimetic Design Workshop is hosted by TOBB University of Economics and Technology, Faculty of Architecture and Design in Ankara, Turkey, organized within the Erasmus+ framework as a Blended Intensive Programme. Developed through the collaboration of international partners bringing together expertise from architecture, biology, engineering and design with Petra Gruber and Zeynep Aksöz as contributing researchers and our students as participants.

Climate-Arch Symposium 1: “Vernacular Futures”🌍

Between February 10th and 12th, the Climate-Arch hosted at the Austrian Academy of Sciences the first Symposium of a series, that examined the intertemporal and interdisciplinary perspectives on vernacular architecture.

The lecture “Speculations on vulnerability and resilience of vernacular architecture” by Petra Gruber, interrogated how locally and culturally specific building forms are shaped through complex climatic, environmental, social, and technical processes.

The first event may be over, but two upcoming Symposia will follow in November 2026 and February 2027.

The Department of Building Construction invites students to join “Biomimetic Design with AI Tools”, an interdisciplinary course hosted by TOBB University of Economics and Technology in Ankara, Turkey, guided by Petra Gruber and Zeynep Aksöz Balzar.

On-site workshop: 27 April – 1 May 2026
Online sessions: February – May 2026
Explore biomimetic design strategies, AI-assisted conceptualization, digital modeling, and 3D printing.

This course is open to students from all programs, with preference given to Architecture and Design students. Work in international teams and gain hands-on experience in cutting-edge design techniques!

📌 5 places available for students of Angewandte – selection is first-come, first-served.
