Microbial Oceanography

Microbial Oceanography A research group based in Vienna that focuses on studying metabolisms of prokaryotes and the interactions with the surrounding Ocean.

Our main focus is the microbial oceanography of the deep ocean where the prokaryotic activity is relatively low compared to the euphotic zone. The deep ocean comprises about 70% of the total ocean volume and hence deep-water microbes mediate a substantial fraction of the biogeochemical cycles with thus far unknown metabolic pathways. We develop and improve available methods in molecular biology an

d biogeochemistry to make them usable in the most oligotrophic parts of the ocean. Then the information from biology and biogeochemistry is linked for a better understanding of how the microbial community might work in the dark ocean.

📌 New publication in Nature Geoscience by Amano et al., reveals that heterotrophic bacteria, particularly the marine genus Alteromonas, substantially contribute to oceanic dissolved inorganic carbon fixation via anaplerotic pathways, accounting for an estimated ~17% of dark DIC fixation and a significant global carbon flux (~0.2 PgC yr-1).

📌 New publication in Limnology and Oceanography by Marchioro et al., shows that fluorescent proteins in Madracis corals have species-specific, structurally distinct distributions that correlate with symbiont localization and light exposure, suggesting they contribute to ecological adaptation and species differentiation.
