Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP)

Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) The Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) is a leading life science centre in Europe with 200 researchers from 40 countries. Part of Vienna BioCenter.

The IMP is a basic biomedical research institute with scientists who are passionately committed to scientific discovery, seeking to unlock some of life’s fundamental mysteries. Largely sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim and through research grants from various national and international funding agencies.

🔬 Egg and s***m use a "lock-and-key" mechanism to initiate .

Andrea Pauli’s lab at the IMP with collaborators have revealed the formation of a fertilisation complex, shedding light on the very first contact between egg and s***m.

Genetic studies have previously identified many proteins involved in the process, but no direct evidence had shown how these factors bind or form complexes to function as a “lock-and-key” mechanism.

Their findings, drawn from studies in zebrafish, mice, and human cells, are published in the journal Cell.

🌟 Relive the Birnstiel Award acceptance talks with us!

In just one month, we will have the pleasure of welcoming our 2024 Birnstiel Awardees to the IMP, where they’ll present their groundbreaking research.

We can’t wait to hear about their discoveries and celebrate their achievements!

While we anticipate this year's presentations, let’s take a moment to revisit some of the inspiring highlights from past awardees.

The most popular talk from 2019 is by Mohamed El-Brolosy, former PhD student in the lab of Didier Stainier at the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research in Bad Nauheim, Germany. In November 2019, he was presented with the International Birnstiel Award for Doctoral Research in Molecular Life Sciences for his work on the molecular foundations of genetic compensation in zebrafish and mouse models.

Mohamed El-Brolosy has since continued his career as Junior Fellow of the Harvard Society of Fellows, where he investigates the mechanisms underlying genetic robustness.

🎉 Congratulations to Bernardo de Almeida, recent PhD graduate in the lab of Alexander Stark at the IMP, for receiving the 2024 Denise P. Barlow Award for his excellent doctoral thesis!

De Almeida’s research was recognised for its significant impact on our understanding of enhancers’ function, which further sheds light on the fundamental mechanisms of gene expression.
