Thank you for this excellent and wonderful Alumi event last week.

For anyone interested, we recommend the panel discussion on "Democracy: are we at a tipping point?" with Univ.-Prof. Dr. Michael Lysander Fremuth.

To conclude the Semesterfrage, the University of Vienna invites you to a panel discussion on June 22, 2026, at 18:30 in the Großer Festsaal. The keynote address will be delivered by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk. Afterward, there will be an opportunity to continue the discussion over snacks and drinks and to learn about exciting research projects on the topic of democracy at interactive stations.

“Human rights provide essential answers to some of the greatest challenges of our time. My professional experience in diversity, equality, and anti-discrimination work across corporate and agency settings has shown me how often legal frameworks hit a wall when they meet the messy realities of social inequality, which is what drew me to this Master’s. Through the program, I learned that rights are rarely fixed guarantees, but negotiated and uneven in practice and that they only work when grounded in everyday experiences and approached through an intersectional lens. This Master’s stands out for its intellectual friction, created by an interdisciplinary cohort and faculty that challenge assumptions rather than simply reinforce what you already know. I would recommend it to anyone ready to think rigorously, take responsibility seriously, and commit to the simple but radical premise: all human rights for all.”

Human Rights Fireside Chat on “The war on Ukraine and international law, from accountability to reparation”

On Wednesday, Wednesday, 14, we had the pleasure of hosting Ambassador Gregor Schusterschitz for a Human Rights Fireside Chat on “The war on Ukraine and international law, from accountability to reparation”. Hon. Prof. MMag. Gregor Schusterschitz is an Austrian senior career diplomat and legal expert specializing in public international law and European Union law. In his talk, Ambassador Schusterschitz touched upon two important areas where international law played a key role and where he participated directly in the negotiations. On the one hand, the endeavors to establish a Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression, which was necessary because of the limited jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court.
The Human Rights Fireside Chat series offers participants of the Human Rights master’s program a unique opportunity to engage directly with leading experts and distinguished professionals on pressing human rights issues.
