We're proud to announce our new dual degree program with Hertie School 🎓

Starting fall 2027, students will split their two years between Vienna and Berlin, graduating with both a Master of Public Administration from CEU and a Master of Public Policy from Hertie School.

The program is designed for the realities of today's policy landscape, covering AI governance, climate change, European integration, polarization, and populism, with a strong practical orientation that includes a mandatory internship of at least six weeks.

Two cities. Two degrees. Two of Europe's leading social science universities, both members of the CIVICA alliance. 🤝

How should security studies respond to a world facing growing instability, ongoing conflicts, and major global challenges?

On 22 October, editors of five journals in global politics and security studies will discuss where the field stands today and how it can better respond to current challenges. The roundtable will look at the role of security researchers, educators, and advisors in shaping responsible security policy and practice.

The discussion features María Martín de Almagro (Journal of Intervention and State Building), Katharine Millar (Security Dialogue), Swati Parashar (International Feminist Journal of Politics), Somdeep Sen (Critical Studies on Security), and Alex de Waal (World Peace Foundation). Moderated by Xymena Kurowska (CEU).

Congratulations to the Verzió International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival on receiving HUF 50 million in funding from the National Film Institute for its 23rd edition! 🎬

Co-organized by Blinken OSA Archivum since 2005, Verzió has become an important platform for international documentary films and stories that bring human rights issues into focus. More than 270,000 people have attended the festival’s programs over the years.

This year, Verzió returns November 16–25 in Budapest and seven other Hungarian cities, with an online program running November 26–December 6.

What comes after democratic change? 🤔 This question was at the heart of the 2026 Budapest Forum, which brought together policymakers, academics, journalists, activists and political leaders at CEU Budapest site to discuss the new dynamics of democratic change.

Through panel discussions and keynote sessions, our participants explored the opportunities and challenges democracies face after periods of democratic erosion, and what it takes to build resilient democratic institutions.

The Budapest Forum is co-organized by the CEU Democracy Institute, the Political Capital Institute, and the Municipality of Budapest - Karácsony Gergely.

We're proud to be part of this event series and to contribute to these important conversations on the future of democracy.

We're proud to celebrate 30 years of the Department of Gender Studies at CEU 🎉

Since becoming a degree-granting program, the department has graduated more than 975 master's students and 60 PhD students, establishing itself as a pioneer of gender studies teaching and scholarship in Central and Eastern Europe and beyond.

On September 23, current and former faculty, alumni and also students came together to mark this milestone, reflect on the department's legacy, and look ahead to the next chapter of critical research and teaching.

"We've been something of a critical beacon in the broad fight for a more inclusive, equal, and open vision of society," said Professor Hadley Z. Renkin, Head of Department.

It was great to meet so many people at JobMesse Vienna 2026 this weekend! 👋

Our colleagues spent two days at Marx Halle talking with visitors about career opportunities at CEU, what it’s like to work in higher education and the range of roles available across our university.

We also had the chance to speak with prospective students interested in CEU’s degree programs, making it a great opportunity to introduce visitors to both sides of our community: CEU as a workplace and as a university.

Nothing says welcome to CEU like a boat tour in a national park. 🛶🌿

Our Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy kicked off the year with their annual retreat, taking 50+ new students, faculty, and staff to the Donau-Auen National Park for two days of team building, sustainability challenges and a guided tour through one of Vienna's most biodiverse landscapes.

Oh, and one of the park's project managers? A CEU alum. 👋

What can Hungary’s experience teach us about the possibility of democratic renewal?

At CEU’s 35th Anniversary Presidential Lecture Series, Kim Lane Scheppele, Laurance S. Rockefeller Professor of Sociology and International Affairs at Princeton University and founding co-director of CEU’s Gender Studies Program, explored this question in her lecture, “Can Hungary Start a Democratic Cascade?”

Drawing on her decades of research on constitutional democracy, Scheppele examined how techniques of democratic erosion can spread across borders, and whether the same might be true of democratic restoration.

Her lecture explored the 2026 Hungarian election, the role of broad political coalitions, the importance of institutional reform and the challenges of rebuilding democratic institutions after a period of democratic backsliding.

The discussion continued with CEU Interim President and Rector Carsten Q. Schneider and Pro-Rector for External Relations Mathias Möschel, with questions from the audience on democratic renewal, the role of the EU and the potential for political lessons to travel across borders.
