Is liberal society in crisis, or simply at a crossroads?

Last Thursday, the 6th event of our Presidential Lecture Series welcomed Steffen Mau, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Political and Social Science and Professor of Macrosociology at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, for a lecture titled "Societies of Change, Societies of Crisis? On the Contestations of the Liberal Model."

Mau examined the symptoms of crisis affecting the liberal model of society today, drawing on his work on inequality, political polarization, and social change. His latest book, Trigger Points: Inequality and Political Polarization in Contemporary Society, explores exactly these themes.

The evening took place at the Wien Museum, where Director Matti Bunzl welcomed the audience and highlighted the museum's growing collaboration with CEU through their joint museum studies program, now in its third year. Hosted by CEU Interim President and Rector Carsten Q. Schneider.

The Academic Year 2026/27 is officially open.

Yesterday, we celebrated our Opening Ceremony at Expedithalle, where CEU Interim President and Rector Carsten Q. Schneider welcomed our new students to the community.

The program featured speeches from two students who set the tone beautifully for the year ahead. Shehryar Hassan, a second-year MA student in Economics, Data, and Policy, spoke on behalf of returning students. Incoming MS Social Data Science student Zheng Zeng addressed the new cohort with words that resonated across the room: "Our task is the same: to analyze the world rigorously so we can change it meaningfully."

A highlight of the afternoon was the conferral of the 15th annual European Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Social Sciences and Humanities, presented by Pro-Rector for Teaching and Learning Eva Fodor to Professor Hana Cervinkova from Maynooth University, Ireland. Professor Cervinkova was recognized for her outstanding work as a political anthropologist and for developing award-winning models for international education.

Welcome to all our new and returning students, faculty, and staff. We look forward to another remarkable year ahead.

🇺🇦 🌍 Introducing Global Invisible University

For the past four years, the Invisible University for Ukraine has demonstrated the power of education to connect people and sustain academic communities, even in the face of war and disruption.

Today, we are building on that experience with the launch of Global Invisible University (GIU), a permanent, transnational program supporting students and scholars whose access to higher education has been disrupted by war, authoritarianism, political repression and displacement.

GIU brings together regional initiatives across Ukraine, Georgia, Belarus and the Western Balkans, with plans to expand to additional regions in the coming years. Participants will have access to university-level courses, mentoring, research opportunities, mobility and international academic networks.

With generous support from the Open Society Foundations, we are proud to make the Global Invisible University a permanent part of CEU’s educational mission.

Applications for Fall 2026 courses are now open.

That's a wrap on the 2025/26 academic year at CEU ✨ Here are some of the numbers that made it one for the books.

But some of the best parts of this year can't be counted — the laughs, the friendships and the knowledge that's now ours to keep.

As we close this chapter, we're already looking ahead and gearing up for what's next 👀

Huge thanks to everyone who made it happen!
