Arbeitsgruppe Bevölkerung, Umwelt und Entwicklung | Universität Wien | Österreich Our research group at the Department of Geography & Regional Research, University of Vienna, Austria, aims to understand and assess population dynamics in the context of environmental changes and development processes. Through o

ur research and teaching activities at the interface of population, environment, and development, we aim to contribute to sustainable development and the livelihood improvement of vulnerable groups. Currently, our research group is working on projects in Thailand, Indonesia, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Morocco. For the last Reading Share of 2024, our colleague Leo shares a paper which emerged from his research on stakeholders and deals with the plurality of perspectives that potentially collide and/or align, when different agendas for change meet. The authors of this article make both a conceptual and a practical contribution to better understand the opportunities and challenges for knowledge co-production processes in the context of sustainability transformations
Read it here: Chambers et al. (2022): Co-productive agility and four collaborative pathways to sustainability transformations. Read it here: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.gloenvcha.2021.102422

Last but not least, we are happy to introduce our new PhD student Songlin Wang on this . With a background in GIS, Songlin will explore the intersection of social science and geoinformatics. His PhD research will focus on the utility of GeoAI in climate mobility issues, looking at mobility data acquisition, measuring human mobility, constructing models to describe environmental events, and much more. Songlin is most excited about creating knowledge about human-environment interactions and contributing to building a more resilient society.

This week in we are happy to introduce Magdalena Berger, our new PhD student and Research Project Assistant!
Magdalena is a dedicated human geographer whose research delves into the intersection of climate change, cultural heritage, and adaptation strategies among indigenous communities. As part of the CuHeMo project, she focuses on agro-pastoralist communities in Ethiopia’s South Omo Valley, with a particular interest in how gendered knowledge systems impact women’s resilience to climate change.

Her favorite part of this work? Learning something new every day while challenging her assumptions. Welcome Magdalena!
