Two of our PhD students from the Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy, Lena Grobusch and Liqin Du hosted a workshop on "Green the City: Nature-Based Solutions for Urban Resilience" on CEU's Long Night of Research (Lange Nacht der Forschung) on April 24, 2026 at its Vienna campus with great success!

The audience really enjoyed the presentation and the interactive game created for the event using the Urban Nature Explorer developed in the earlier Naturvation project. The workshop also encouraged participants to reflect on how greener urban spaces and nature-based solutions may relate to their everyday lives and lifestyle choices.

CEU hosted its Long Night of Research (Lange Nacht der Forschung) on April 24, 2026 at its Vienna campus, offering free, public access to interactive science exhibits, workshops, and lectures. This event is part of Austria's national celebration of research and innovation, which brings together univ...

Alumni publication!

A new study using Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) has revealed that land-use change, particularly deforestation and unplanned agricultural expansion, is significantly intensifying heatwaves across Africa. The interaction between land use and extreme heat is not merely regional; it is grounded in fundamental physical processes,” said co-lead researcher Mr. Ajadi Sodiq (MESPOM Batch ’19, CEU Alumnus)."

The findings have been published in 'Nature Communications Earth & Environment' (Q1) and already been featured by several institutions in Australia, where the lead author is currently based, as well as by a UK agency.

With:
Marton Kruppa - Quantum Commodity Intelligence, Climate policy and CO2 market specialist

Understanding “Rurbanities” and redefining the rules of environmental spatial planning
Monday, February 16, 2026, 1:00 pm – 2:45 pm, Room QS D-002

Guest lecture by Prof. Thanasis Kizos, University of the Aegean,
Mytilene, Greece; a partner of CEU in the MESPOM Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Degree in Environmental Sciences, Policy and Management for 20 years.

"MESPOM is a prototype for common and ‘dual-degree’ programs between universities. What was considered as “hybrid space” in academic cooperation in the early 2000s, has redefined the rules in collaboration and development of double and multiple degree programs. Starting from adding classes from different Institutions, we have now gone to planning common classes and integrating curricula and this is a thing to feel proud about."

"...The shift toward the “rurban” will be discussed by breaking down trends, processes and challenges of urban and rural areas of Europe, including demographic developments, the labor market, gendered geographies, gentrification and “geriatrification” and the “Disneyfication” of the rural (and the urban…) and rurbanities and ecosystem services..."

This lecture is part of ongoing events to celebrate CEU’s 35th anniversary.
