Dear students,

We have now published the new thesis topics for the winter semester on https://www.wu.ac.at/en/dpkm/write-a-thesis/current-thesis-topics/.

If you are interested in writing a thesis with us, you need to express your interest by sending a letter of application to [email protected]. The application letter consists of 3 parts:

the letter of motivation, consisting of the topic you are interested in plus a paragraph explaining what potentially qualifies you for this topic. Note that it is allowed to express interest for more than one topic (as a list in order of prefernce), in such cases a separate motivation paragraph for each topic needs to be provided.

Please send all 3 parts as a single PDF file with the following file name „____.PDF“ to the E-mail adress mentioned above.

Deadline for expression of interest is 18. October 2024.

Students will be assigned to topics based on their interest and their prior knowledge in relevant areas. This will be handled at the kickoff workshop, taking place on 25. October 2024, 09:30-11:00 D5.0.002 . This will be the singular opportunity to sign up for a thesis topic in the winter semester. Note that we will only offer new thesis supervision in March 2025.

All students must familiarize themselves with the latest regulations of writing a thesis with our institute summarized at https://www.wu.ac.at/en/dpkm/write-a-thesis/.

Our vision
In our research group on Data Management within the Institute for Data, Process and Knowledge Management at WU Vienna, we are convinced that the future of Artificial Intelligence and Datamanagement will be shaped by Open Knowledge Repositories such as Knowledge Graphs, as well as combined symbolic and subsymbolic approaches (Hybrid AI) that leverage both unstructured text data, structured data, as well as other multi-modal data, inline, for instance, with respective recent AI roadmaps i. As such, we are looking for candidates who are willing to work in an international, interdisciplinary team at the intersection of

Knowledge Graphs
Artificial Intelligence
to jointly develop our vision of "Natural" Data Understanding.
In our group we use a mix of approaches to combining methods to integrate and automate quality improvement of structured and non-structured data with a focus on leveraging and building Knowledge Graphsii as a backbone for hybrid AI. We expect candidates to join the team to have a strong background in at least one of these fields and be willing to learn/combine and apply different methods, which is what you should emphasize in your motivation letter.

What to expect
Research life: Collaborate with your colleagues on ongoing research projects at the Institute. Support Institute research projects and set up your own projects with a focus on bringing the above outlined vision forward.
Teaching: Plan, create and teach courses
Supervise students: Advise students and co-supervise their theses and exams
Build a personal network: Use the pre-doc phase to start building your personal network with contacts in research, industry, and business
Organizational and administrative support: Support workshops and conferences we organize together with the Institute team on general tasks
Writing a dissertation: You will be investigating your research topic and spending athird of your working hours on writing your dissertation.
Exciting research projects on topics around Datamanagement, Knowledge Graphs, Artificial Intelligence and their applications in Industry and Business:
Opportunity to explore your own interests in these broad research areas
Interdisciplinary research is encouraged.

What you have to offer
Academic degree: You have completed or will shortly complete a master's degree that qualifies you for enrolling in a PhD program at WU in one of the following subject areas:
Computer Science, Digital Economy, Information Technology, Software Engineering,Information Systems, Business Informatics, Mathematics, Engineering, Social and economic sciences (e.g. Business Administration, Management or Economics), ), or a specialized related field to one of these areas
Language skills: You are fluent and able to express yourself very well in both spoken and written English.
Multimedia Teaching readiness: You already have experience or at least readiness in using multimedia teaching and learning formats.
Additional skills: Experience and intermediate to very good skills in at least one of the following research areas contributing to our research vision is an advantage:
Logical reasoning
Machine Learning
Data Mining
Information Extraction
Semantic Web Technologies
Scalable and Decentralized Data Processing
Data Science Data Analytics a Statistics (including R or Python)
Database theory/Database query languages and query processing
Software engineering (e.g. Java, Python)
Interdisciplinary research (such as for instance combining technical with empirical research methods)
Likewise, we appreciate:
Teaching experience (e.g. prior experience in tutorials, workshops)

Ihre*Seine Hauptaufgabe ist es, die Neugestaltung der STEOP- und CBK-Fächer der Wirtschaftsinformatik zu unterstützen. Insbesondere soll die*der Tutor*in maßgeblich an der Videoproduktion von Lehr-/Lernvideos mitwirken (Pre- und Post-Produktionstätigkeiten; Storyboard, Dreh und Videoschnitt).
