Meet Kate Downton, a local dancer here in Adelaide 💃🏻

Kate has been dancing since 2012 and is particularly drawn to the style waacking. In this interview we discuss
- how she got into dancing,
- common misconceptions about Waacking,
- dance styles she wants to explore in the future
& more!

🔥FEATURING AN EXHIBITION DANCE BATTLE WITH CLIVE “BEARDED DRAGON” ELLWOOD 🔥 Clive “Bearded Dragon” is a reputable dancer in the community and hails from NSW! He will be coming to Adelaide and this is a good opportunity to see what Waacking dance is.

“I’m in my third year of B. Accounting and Corporate Finance! I really enjoy dance, in particular the funk and disco dance styles, partially because the music is so groovy. It’s also because beyond learning the technicalities involved, these styles emphasise individuality, musicality, and freedom which I find gets my creative juices flowing. I am also not a gym person, so dance is also just a fun and cool way to exercise.”

What does your club do? 🎉
We focus primarily on the promotion of funk and disco dance styles, i.e. waacking, locking and popping dance. We conduct events such as dance jams and social gatherings! We also aim to conduct cheap dance workshops taught by reputable dancers in the community.

How can students get involved? 👥

Favourite movie which captures funk & disco dance? 🍿
There has yet to be a movie that truly captures the essence of funk & disco dance. However, we do enjoy the dance reality show "Street Dance of China Season 4" where you can watch amazing names in the dance industry do their thing. Our favourite dancer on SDC Season 4 is Japanese waacking dancer Ibuki! 🙂

When is your next event? 🏖
We have an upcoming event after final exams on (tentatively) 20th of November! It will be a social event at the beach with free food and drinks. Details are on our socials.

Easy dance move for funk & disco dance newbies? 😌
While there isn't a universally "easy" dance move for beginners, our club pick would be the basic waack (only because a couple of us have a background in waacking dance! We believe that some dance moves come more/less naturally to some than others)

What is your club most looking forward to next year? 🤩
We would like to organise more dance workshops on a regular basis next year.
