What does character look like when doing the right thing isn’t easy or convenient?

2020 C.A.S. Hawker Scholar Oliver Douglas reflects on the example set by Charles Hawker and the standard he still holds himself to today.

For Oliver, Hawker’s moral courage and personal integrity remain particularly powerful:

“How are we living up to our standards when it’s not easy or convenient to do so? Because I think that reveals our true character.”

As we approach the opening of applications for the 2027 C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship, Oliver’s words are a timely reminder that the Scholarship is about more than academic achievement. Character, leadership, service and integrity all matter.

Applications open at 9am on Monday, 2 November 2026.

An opportunity worth sharing.

Schools, teachers, careers advisers and Year 12 coordinators can play an important role in helping young Australians discover opportunities that could shape their future.

As we prepare to open applications for the 2027 C.A.S. Hawker Scholarships, we’re asking educators across Australia to help us spread the word and encourage suitable students to consider applying.

Pictured are three current Hawker Scholars — 2026 Scholar Khuslen Batmandakh, a graduate of Merewether High School, and 2025 Scholars Nicholas and Thomas Henchliffe, graduates of Prince Alfred College. All three are now studying at The Australian National University and residing at Burgmann College.

The C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship recognises academic ability alongside personal qualities, character, leadership, service and contribution.

If a student comes to mind, encourage them to learn more.

Scholarships are valued at up to $75,000 over three years.

2027 applications open 2 November 2026.

Please share this opportunity with your students, families, colleagues and school community.

Before you start writing, start reflecting.

A personal statement is more than a list of achievements. It’s an opportunity to share the experiences that have shaped you, the values that guide you and the contribution you hope to make.

For prospective C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship applicants, that reflection can also begin with understanding Charles Hawker's life and legacy.

A scholar, soldier, pastoralist and statesman, Charles Hawker was remembered for his courage, integrity, leadership and commitment to service.

As you begin thinking about your own application, take the time to learn about his story. What resonates with you? Where do your own experiences and values connect with the ideals behind the Scholarship? And what contribution do you hope to make through your own journey?

Your personal statement starts with your story.

Introducing the 2026 C.A.S. Hawker Scholar, Ms Khuslen Batmandakh.

Khuslen has been named the 145th C.A.S. Hawker Scholar, continuing a scholarship legacy that has supported young Australians for more than 36 years.

Currently studying at The Australian National University and residing at Burgmann College , Khuslen graduated from Merewether High School in Broadmeadow last year.

Her commitment to community and service has already been recognised through a number of honours, including being named the 2025 Newcastle Young Citizen of the Year and receiving the Order of Australia Association NSW Youth Community Service Award.

The 2026 Scholarship was presented by Senator Andrew McLachlan at Parliament House in Canberra on 12 August.

Reflecting on what receiving the scholarship means to her, Khuslen said:

“I hope to honour the legacy of C.A.S. Hawker by contributing to Australian public life with integrity, service and a commitment to strengthening democratic institutions. I am determined to use my education and unique background and experiences to serve my community and country with the same dedication that defined Mr Hawker’s life.”

What's one experience that changed you?

The experiences that shape us aren't always the biggest or most obvious.

Perhaps it was taking on a leadership role at school, helping your family through a difficult time, volunteering in your community, overcoming a setback, or learning something about yourself through sport, music or work.

These moments often become the stories that reveal our character, resilience and values.

As applications for the C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship approach later this year, now is a great time to pause and reflect on the experiences that have helped shape who you are.

The Hawker Scholarship recognises more than academic achievement. It seeks applicants who demonstrate leadership potential, character and a commitment to making a positive contribution to their communities.

We'd love to hear from you. What's one experience that's shaped the person you are today?

The future isn't something you find.

It's something you build.

For students approaching the final months of school, the future can sometimes feel uncertain.

The decisions ahead — what to study, where to live, what path to pursue — may shape the years to come.

But meaningful futures are rarely built in a single moment.

They are built through curiosity, effort, resilience and a willingness to embrace new opportunities.

The C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship supports students as they take the next step in their journey, helping them pursue their ambitions while becoming part of a community that values leadership, contribution and personal growth.

What are you hoping to build in the years ahead?
