Could you be a Hawker Scholar?

The C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship is about more than academic achievement. Selection also considers personal qualities, character and the experiences that demonstrate how you contribute to your school, community and beyond.

If you’re considering applying for a 2027 Scholarship, now is a good time to start reflecting on your own experiences — the opportunities you’ve embraced, the challenges you’ve navigated, what you’ve learned and the contribution you’ve made along the way.

C.A.S. Hawker Scholarships are valued at up to $75,000 over three years and support scholars through their university studies and residential college experience.

Applications open at 9am on Monday, 2 November 2026.

Introducing the 2026 C.A.S. Hawker Scholar, Ms Khuslen Batmandakh.

Khuslen has been named the 145th C.A.S. Hawker Scholar, continuing a scholarship legacy that has supported young Australians for more than 36 years.

Currently studying at The Australian National University and residing at Burgmann College , Khuslen graduated from Merewether High School in Broadmeadow last year.

Her commitment to community and service has already been recognised through a number of honours, including being named the 2025 Newcastle Young Citizen of the Year and receiving the Order of Australia Association NSW Youth Community Service Award.

The 2026 Scholarship was presented by Senator Andrew McLachlan at Parliament House in Canberra on 12 August.

Reflecting on what receiving the scholarship means to her, Khuslen said:

“I hope to honour the legacy of C.A.S. Hawker by contributing to Australian public life with integrity, service and a commitment to strengthening democratic institutions. I am determined to use my education and unique background and experiences to serve my community and country with the same dedication that defined Mr Hawker’s life.”

What's one experience that changed you?

The experiences that shape us aren't always the biggest or most obvious.

Perhaps it was taking on a leadership role at school, helping your family through a difficult time, volunteering in your community, overcoming a setback, or learning something about yourself through sport, music or work.

These moments often become the stories that reveal our character, resilience and values.

As applications for the C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship approach later this year, now is a great time to pause and reflect on the experiences that have helped shape who you are.

The Hawker Scholarship recognises more than academic achievement. It seeks applicants who demonstrate leadership potential, character and a commitment to making a positive contribution to their communities.

In 2020, Sai Campbell received a C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship at a time when financial pressures were placing her university studies at risk.

Today, she is a Rhodes Scholar and DPhil candidate at the University of Oxford, researching health inequalities and helping build stronger communities
through her work.

It's a question many students ask.

The answer isn't a perfect ATAR, a long list of achievements or a single leadership title.

The Hawker Trustees look for students who demonstrate:

• Character
• Leadership potential
• Initiative
• Contribution to others

Some applicants have led teams or organisations.

Others have supported their communities, overcome challenges or quietly made a difference in the lives of those around them.

There is no single pathway to becoming a Hawker Scholar.
