Hugh Stretton’s passionate manifesto, Australia Fair, wondered if fairness was still our defining national characteristic. Almost 20 years later, how are we faring? Join Natasha Stott Despoja AO at the Stretton Institute’s annual Hugh Stretton Oration entitled ‘Australia Fair: is the playing field fair for women and girls?’ on Wednesday 4 May at 5.30pm at the Elder Hall. As Australian public life faces a ‘reckoning’ over discrimination and disrespect of women, Natasha will examine how the pandemic and other world events, make the creation of a fairer world that is much more challenging, especially when it comes to violence against women and girls. Perhaps now is the time for a new road map - a new manifesto - for change.

With the performing arts reeling from the impact of COVID, our webinar 'Australian Cultural Policy Now: from quick fixes to long-term progress' explores a pathway forward. Grappling with issues such as whether cultural policy should focus nationally or locally, how to shift cultural policy from industrial policy to public service, how inclusive it could be, and how building for the future might take place, three distinguished speakers survey the landscape. They will provide an overview of the settings for Cultural Policy in Australia and also explore how the substructure can be nurtured.

There is considerable evidence to suggest that global demand for child sexual abuse material (CSAM) is growing. Policing this pernicious problem is a global priority. But it’s no easy task, both because of the material’s sheer abundance and the damage that repeated exposure to it can cause to officers’ mental health.

Join our webinar on Tuesday 23 February at 10.30am to hear Dr Russell Brewer, Associate Professor of Criminology at the University of Adelaide and Dr Bryce Westlake, Associate Professor in the Department of Justice Studies at San Jose State University discuss this topic.
