The second September book was Guantanamo Diary by Mohamedou Ould Salahi, who was unfairly imprisoned and tortured by the United States government for 14 years. We gained insight on Salahi’s experience, and the Islamophobia that facilitated the inhuman treatment. Despite the horrors he experienced at the hands of his captors, we were surprised at how much compassion he still had for them.

Last month our first September pole winner was No Friend But The Mountains 🏔️ by Behrouz Boochani. He wrote, what later became his book, while being held in an Australian immigration facility, using a smuggled phone. We gained a deeper understanding of the inhuman treatment and why refugees chose to stay when offered to go back to their home country.

To kick off September we held a live reading of excerpts from incarcerated women. James Davey read the Letters of Rosa Luxemburg, cherrie 🌸 read Ruth First 117 Days and fatima read Memoirs From The Women’s Prison by El Saadawi.

It was a wonderful performance from everyone and fascinating learning about the experiences of these strong women while incarcerated. Thank you to James, Cherry and Fatima for your readings

To kick off September we held a live reading of excerpts from incarcerated women. James Davey read the letter of Rosa Luxemburg, cherrie 🌸 read Memoirs From The Women’s Prison by El Saadawi and fatima read Ruth First 117 Days.

Announcing our October books!

Starting with some light fantasy, we are reading the novella The River Has Roots by Amal El-Mohtar, and meeting to discuss 5pm Wed 7th October in Nexus10 UB34 and via discord.

Then we're going to be diving into some deep science fiction by reading Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton, and meeting to discuss 5pm Wed 21st October in Nexus10 UB34 and via discord (we'll be watching the movie the week earlier too, watch this space for that announcement!)

We're doing a live reading this week, to kick start the horror theme for October (a little early)!

This one is going to be a bit different, because it's a short story from Emily Carroll's graphic novel, Through the Woods, so we'll have an accompanying slideshow to make sure you get to see all the gorey graphics too.

We have a movie night this Wednesday!

This movie night will be a little different... In person!
Join us 5pm Wednesday in Nexus10 UB34 (or over Discord) to watch Just Mercy (2019)!

While we are not reading the book associated with this film, it does cover many of the topics and themes related to this month's books about imprisonment and injustices and inhumane treatment of people.
