CAMEA Adelaide

CAMEA Adelaide Centre for Asian and Middle Eastern Architecture (CAMEA)
School of Architecture and Built Environmen

CAMEA's establishment coincided with major shifts in peoples’ attitudes towards the built environment in Asia and the Middle East caused by unsettling changes in three areas: environment, technology, and culture. Awareness of the long-term environmental consequences of modern urbanisation and industrialisation has highlighted the urgent need for new approaches to a sustainable future. Advanced com

munication technologies have called for new ways of perceiving and dealing with reality. Intense cross-cultural interactions have generated a strong demand for broader and more culture-sensitive modes of architectural thinking. CAMEA was founded to address the demand for new cross-cultural understanding of architecture in the context of these major global shifts.

PATIO Conversation 04 explores the theme of "Material and Construction Histories," focusing on historical and geospatial movement of specific materials and questioning how materials and buildings are shaped by multiple social, cultural, and economic dynamics within the region. First, from Yale University will present their research on 'Mineral Landscapes of Cement-Concrete in South Asia' where they will explore sites of extraction and the nature of infrastructure within mutually constitutive mineral, industrial, laboural, built and imagined landscapes. We will then shift to a discussion of technology application, where from CEPT University will present their work on the 'Techno-Material History of the Old Bombay-Poona Road,' exploring the early twentieth century experimentation with cement-concrete in road making. Through a discussion of archival photographs, they will further trace the evolution of road making in the post-independence period and discuss its implications for modernisation and nationalisation. Our expert respondent for this session is from Ahmedabad University, who will build on this discussion based on his own research in History of Science and Technology in South Asia.
