The Florey Postgraduate Research Conference was held last month, showcasing our outstanding research activities.

In its 19th year, this conference gives HDR students the opportunity to discuss their research with fellow students, academics, industry partners and other major stakeholders of the University.

In addition to showcasing the high calibre research being undertaken by our HDR students, the conference also featured an additional Careers Expo component aimed at providing advice, guidance, opportunity and support for all current students.

Congratulations to our award recipients who were recognised at the conference.

Congratulations the Vaccines and Infectious Diseases Group who won the 2025 Australian Museum Eureka Prize for Infectious Diseases Research.

The team includes: Professor Helen Marshall AM (leader), Dr Mark McMillan and Dr Bing Wang, Dr Louise Flood (SA Health), Andrew Lawrence (SA Pathology/University of Adelaide), and Vicki Krause (NT Health).

The Vaccines and Infectious Diseases Group demonstrated that one vaccine can protect against both meningococcal B disease and gonorrhoea – two serious infections that disproportionately impact First Nations young people. Their research has changed global vaccine policy, informed national programs and offers a new strategy to curb gonorrhoea as antibiotic resistance grows.

The Australian Museum Eureka Prizes are the nation’s premier science awards, celebrating the very best of Australian scientific discovery, invention, communication, innovation and leadership.

Congratulations to Dr Sonia Hines (Senior Research Fellow at JBI) on joining the global healthy ageing research team, working on a $1.22m project addressing a critical gap in healthy ageing.

CONGRATULATIONS
to our colleague Dr Sonia Hines (Senior Research Fellow at JBI) for joining the global healthy ageing research team.

Sonia is named as a co-investigator on a major international project, ‘From Deficit to Capacity in Healthy Ageing: Development and Validation of a Measure of Psychological Capacity in Older People’.

Funded by Velux Stiftung, Switzerland, and conducted in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), this 2.5-year study has been awarded a $1.22 million grant. It addresses a critical gap in healthy ageing, aiming to shift the focus from deficits to strengths.

As part of the core research team, Dr Hines will draw on her extensive expertise in evidence synthesis and research methods to contribute to the development and validation of the new scale. With a research career spanning systematic reviews, research pedagogy, and healthcare in rural and remote contexts, she brings deep methodological insight and a strong commitment to evidence-based practice.

Congratulations to Sonia and the entire team for advancing inclusive, evidence-based healthcare.

Research Tuesdays | The maternal microbiome

Complications such as preterm birth and miscarriage affect thousands of Australian families every year. Worldwide, preterm birth is the leading cause of infant death. Among the many determinants of pregnancy challenges, one often goes unnoticed: the microbiome—the trillions of bacteria, fungi, and viruses living in your body.

University of Adelaide academics are researching the body's bacteria to improve care across pregnancy and women's health overall. Join us in August to learn about the latest breakthroughs.

When: 5.30 pm, Tuesday 12 August
Where: The Braggs Lecture Theatre
