According to student Andy Enever, it's the combination of academic learning, spiritual growth, and a supportive community.

“𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑠𝑡 𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑦𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑎𝑡 𝐴𝐿𝐶 𝑖𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑖𝑡 𝑜𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑠 𝑠𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑓𝑎𝑟 𝑑𝑒𝑒𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑛 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑤𝑙𝑒𝑑𝑔𝑒.”

From engaging with God's Word to learning from experienced lecturers and connecting with students across Australia, Andy says his ALC journey has been both spiritually and personally enriching.

ALC Library was both the host and topic of the 10th Fritzsche Oration held on 17 September in partnership with the Lutheran Archives. Visitors gathered onsite and online to hear presentations from a panel comprising Dr Pam Zweck, Trevor Schaefer, and Professor Wendy Mayer.

Dr Pam Zweck led proceedings with an overview of the library’s history between 1975-1996, with reference to her own experience and to the work of Pastor Trevor Zweck, who can largely be credited with the professionalization of the then Löhe Memorial Library. Pam shared developments in technology, library networks, professional practice, and some of the names and faces that built the ALC Library.

Trevor Schaefer followed with a snapshot of chosen highlights from the rare book collection. Given time limitations, Trevor focused on the book of Concord, Luther pamphlets, and the 1561 Luther Bible held by the ALC Library. Trevor’s enthusiasm and expertise were clear and his explanation of the development of Luther’s writing and the imagery contained in the title pages of Luther’s original published pamphlets, were of interest to both old and new visitors to the library.

Professor Wendy Mayer finished the panel presentation with a brief overview of the areas of research the ALC Library has supported and its place within the University of Divinity and broader research community. Her overview finished with reflection on the importance physical libraries still hold in the digital age, sparking lively discussion over drinks and refreshment following the talks.

Bush camps are held several times each year to support the ministry of Aboriginal pastors, evangelists, church workers and church leaders serving the approximately 6,000 Aboriginal Lutherans across Central Australia. ALC has a long and continuing commitment to support the training of Aboriginal church workers, with lecturers travelling to teach at these gatherings several times a year.

Lecturer, Tom Brennen, was blessed to represent ALC at the July bush camp held in Areyonga, around 2½ hours west of Alice Springs. The camp was situated in a beautiful part of the local community, surrounded by rocky outcrops. The weather was unusually wet and even fog rolled in. Dinner was interrupted on the second night by a visit from a ‘Jesus donkey’, named for the cross of black hair along their backs and shoulders.

Please pray for the Aboriginal pastors, evangelists, and church workers who faithfully proclaim Christ to our sisters and brothers across Central Australia, and for the ongoing partnership between ALC and the Lutheran Church as we continue to support their ministry.

Those in attendance included past and present staff from Bible College SA, St Barnabas College, Catholic Education, Uniting College for Leadership and Theology, Tabor and ALC.

On 4 August, ALC joined Blueprint Ministries (LCA SA/NT District) at Cornerstone College’s Career Expo. With invitations sent to 25 neighbouring schools in the Adelaide Hills and south-eastern suburbs, approximately 650 people attended the event. Being at an event of this size allowed both ALC and Blueprint Ministries to have conversations with both students and their families about career and volunteer pathways within the Lutheran Church.

This sort of promotion is essential if we are to prepare the next generation for roles in congregations, schools and church departments.

Staff from ALC have been attending this event since 2014 during which time they have partnered with a number of Lutheran entities including the LCA's Church Worker Support department, to promote service in the church.
