And the last, but not least, introducing Andres Sifuentes

Andres is an anthropologist originally from Peru. He is currently is a PhD candidate at the University Of South Australia (UniSA) doing a Social Research project focused on Social Acceptance in the Mineral Exploration stage, in relation to the new technology that is used in this stage, such as that developed from MinEx CRC. The objective his research is to understand the social impact, the relationships that are generated and the motivations of the stakeholders that are involved in the process of granting or withholding a Social License to Operate.

Before coming to Australia, Andres worked as a Social Specialist and Anthropologist consultant for large Mining Companies for more than 10 years, doing fieldwork and designing qualitative tools for data collection and social data analysis.

The next member of the committee is Elnaz Khazaie, Social Media Administrator

Elnaz Khazaie is a geologist with an academic background in Geology and Sedimentology. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Geology, and her Master’s degree in Sedimentology.
She officially commenced her PhD studies in March 2024 at Adelaide University, South Australia.

Elnaz’s PhD project focuses on the geochemistry and geochronology of the Neoproterozoic units in the Officer Basin and Yeneena Basin in Western Australia.
She employs novel metal (Ca & Sr) and traditional (C & O) isotope techniques to evaluate seawater chemistry in the Officer Basin and trace the source of fluids that lead to Cu mineralisation in Nifty sedimentary copper deposits.

Introducing the next member of our committee, Jayden Squire as Program & Abstracts Coordinator

Jayden is an Honours student at the University of Adelaide. His research focuses on novel dating of meteorite impacts, particularly the Gosses Bluff Crater located in Central Australia using the in-situ Rb-Sr dating system and the general geochemistry of impact melt rocks. The new Rb-Sr dating of Gosses Bluff seeks to define the role that the impact had on global environments and extinctions.

Next up, introducing Nicko Wyndham as our Sponsorship Manager

Nicko is an Honours student at the University of Adelaide. Born and raised in Sydney, he moved to Canberra where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Earth Science from the Australian National University. While studying in Canberra he completed six months interning as an Engineering Geologist with a geotechnical engineering company. Now living in Adelaide, his Honours project is aiming to address uncertainties surrounding Snowball Earth models through using sedimentology, geochemistry, palaeomagnetism, and geochronology.

Next up, introducing our next member, Ruoheng Li, Treasurer of the committee, Honours Student at the University of Adelaide

Li is an honours student at the University of Adelaide majoring in Geology. Li is the Treasurer for GESSS-SA. His honours project focuses on chemostratigraphy, isotopic stratigraphy and geochronology of South Nicholson region.

Introducing the next member of our committee, Ananyaa Deepak, the secretary

Ananyaa is originally from India and currently in her third year of a PhD program at the University of Adelaide. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Lucknow, followed by postgraduate studies at Pondicherry University in India. Eager to expand her knowledge and gain more research experience, she enrolled in an MRes degree at Macquarie University, NSW. During this one-year program, she used shale petrography to test the Precambrian reverse weathering hypothesis using a one-billion-year record of marine shales from the Proterozoic basins of India.

Currently, Ananyaa is a member of the Tectonics and Earth Systems research group at the University of Adelaide. Her PhD work involves studying the greater McArthur Basin, with the aim of strengthening the chronostratigraphic and chemostratigraphic framework across this region, focusing on the sedimentary successions of the Birrindudu Basin in the Northern Territory, Australia.

Next up is Travis Batch (Vice-Chair)

Travis is originally from regional NSW and is currently a PhD candidate studying at the University of South Australia. His research focuses on the mineral chemistry of REE-bearing phosphates (e.g. monazite, rhabdophane) and their application to iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) and iron sulfide-copper-gold (ISCG) exploration in the Cloncurry District, Queensland. His project is part of the MinEx CRC.

The 2024 Student Symposium is around the corner and now It is time to know our 2024 Conference Team.

First up is the Chair of the committee, Jason Charlwood (PhD Candidate, University of Adelaide)
Jason is a PhD student studying at The University of Adelaide focusing on the geological disposal of nuclear waste. He is originally from the United Kingdom and has completed his BSc (Hons) at The University of Adelaide in 2022 on artificial isotopes in soils from the old nuclear weapons testing site at Maralinga, SA.

His current research focuses on the geochemistry occurring between radioactive elements and various rock types. Understanding the mobility of these elements as well as the concentrations, activities and reactions with various minerals is key to aid in further understanding for geological disposal.
