Oil Painting with an Ebauche for Portraits with Jay Lord

An intermediate intro workshop to realist portrait painting; focusing on exploring oil paints as a medium and studying portrait anatomy. This course introduces the 19th century French underpainting technique called an Ebauche, which creates a deeper and more luminous look to the finished painting and generally results in a much faster process. Participants will be practicing drawing, colour mixing and working from photographic reference to paint fully realised isolated facial features.

All courses are currently 5% off during the early-bird period - ending 1 November.

Summer School 2027 | Contemporary Abstraction Masterclass with Christian Lock

In this three-day Masterclass, students will explore a range of contemporary approaches to Abstract painting. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the rich language of Abstraction from the historical modes of Gesture, Geometry and the Biomorphic, through to the new elements and hybrid forms of Contemporary Abstraction.

Students will be working on multiple paintings each session, taking an experimental approach to the materials and processes of painting, working towards a minimum of one resolved painting.

Artist Talk: Badiucao

Join artist Badiucao for a free artist talk about his recent graphic novel.

Badiucao is a Chinese Australian artist, activist, and political provocateur. Born in Shanghai, his works address censorship, authoritarianism, and capitalism.

For years, he operated anonymously — until his dramatic unmasking as told in the ABC documentary, “China’s Artful Dissident.” He has collaborated with Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Freedom House, and other rights organisations.
His upcoming graphic novel, YOU MUST TAKE PART IN REVOLUTION, is co-authored with Emmy-nominated American journalist Melissa Chan.

We have just added a new course for Summer School with Dr Daniel Connell: Expressive Landscape Painting

Mon 1 Feb – Wed 3 Feb (3 days)
9.30am – 4.30pm

This course is designed for those who want to create paintings in the tradition of landscape while experimenting with various techniques and finding a unique expressive voice of their own. Designed for raw beginners and advanced painters.

Students will look at other artists who have painted landscapes in a broadly expressive way and discuss the significance of representing place and our relationship to it. The course is designed around acrylic paint because it is economical and fast-drying. Students are encouraged to paint large-scale and multiple works.

The popular 'Book Binding for Artists' course with Damien Warman is back for Summer School 2027.

In this three-day intensive course, participants will learn several ways to make books within the Western craft-binding tradition, with diversions into other structures useful to the artist. The techniques learnt will enable participants to continue making books and journals with minimal tools after the course.

All materials are provided, and participants are encouraged to bring their own decorative papers, such as cyanotypes, dyed paper, or intaglio or relief prints, to bind into their books.

We have just opened Summer School 2027 courses for bookings on our website.

This program features four masterclasses taught by artists Anna Platten, Christian Lock, Thomas Readett and Ida Sophia.

The program also includes courses in printmaking, watercolour, portraiture, landscape painting, book binding, cyanotypes, collage, canvas stretching and more.

We also have two courses designed for teens - an oil painting intensive with Kate Hendry and a two-day Teen Intensive with artists Alex Beckinsale, Yana Lehey, Susan Wakefield and Ruby Thamm.
