The automotive industry is a strong and exciting industry to start your career in, with changes in vehicle technology and business practices offering all kinds of exciting opportunities now and into the future

As the MTA is the peak body for the industry, MTA Training and Employment delivers to apprentices and trainees high quality, industry developed training that is modern and responsive. We also offer access to employment pathways and support that come from being the South Australian automotive industry's peak body. MTA Training and Employment makes it easy for both MTA host employers and industry apprentice employers because regardless of whether an apprentice is industry employed or MTA employed, apprentices can still access the same high quality training and facilities through the MTA's Training and Employment Centre in Royal Park.

Our MTA Monaro was on display alongside hundreds of cars, bikes, and trucks, celebrating the craftsmanship, passion and stories behind the vehicles that bring our community together.

The 2026 WorldSkills Australia Automotive Refinishing and Automotive Body Repair Regional Competition brought together some of South Australia’s most talented apprentices and young tradespeople for a day of competition, craftsmanship and industry connection.

Hosted at our Automotive Refinishing and Body Repair Centre of Excellence, competitors tested their skills against industry standards while showcasing the dedication, creativity and technical ability that drives the future of our industry.

Celebrating the next generation of automotive talent

MTA's Training and Employment Centre was buzzing as apprentices and young tradespeople competed in the 2026 WorldSkills Australia Automotive Refinishing and Automotive Body Repair Regional Competition.

Across a full day of competition, participants put their technical skills, precision and craftsmanship to the test.

From precision and technique, to creativity and design, our apprentices put their skills to the test in our Custom Painting unit.

This hands-on unit gives apprentices the opportunity to explore colour theory, design, and artistic techniques while applying professional refinishing practices to create their own one-off custom pieces, and the best part? They get to take their creations home!

Max’s 2006 Toyota Crown Majesta is a Japanese import powered by a 4.3L V8, with factory air suspension, heated seats, and even a bar fridge in the back.

For Max, part of the appeal is understanding how all the technical features of the car work. That interest in the technical side of cars is also what led him into his automotive electrical apprenticeship at MTA.

Through his apprenticeship, Max is developing hands-on skills and learning to problem-solve, skills he can put straight to use when working on his own Crown.

For him, it’s meant finding a career he genuinely enjoys, while giving him the knowledge and confidence to work on his own cars.

The refinishing industry is evolving at a rapid pace, making it essential for trainers to stay current with the latest technologies, products, and industry practices. Ongoing professional development and continuous learning ensure that apprentices receive training that reflects today’s industry standards.

Working closely with our industry partners is a key part of this process. Their support through product training, technical updates, and upskilling opportunities enables our trainers to deliver relevant, high-quality training that prepares apprentices for the modern workplace.

Our trainers lead from the front by embracing new technology, continually developing their own skills, and setting the standard for excellence. We’re proud to work alongside industry partners like Sherwin-Williams to ensure our training remains current, practical and industry-relevant.

From the football field to the workshop!

We were proud to celebrate Port Adelaide Football Club player Lachie Jones signing his training contract with MTA Training and Employment at host employer Maughan Thiem Cheltenham on Thursday.

Lachie is taking on a dual trade apprenticeship in Light Vehicle Mechanical and Automotive Electrical, balancing his AFL career with building valuable skills for the future.

A big thank you to Lucy Hood MP, Cameron Baker, Maughan Thiem Ford, and Channel 7 Adelaide for helping share Lachie’s story and shine a light on the value of trade pathways.

Good luck, Lachie, we’ll be cheering you on in the workshop and on the field!
