Last week, the 2025 ThincLab eChallenge Gala Dinner delivered an unforgettable evening of energy, inspiration and entrepreneurial ambition. With over 260 guests in attendance, the atmosphere was electric, a vibrant celebration of student creativity and innovation.

Twelve finalist teams from ThincLab’s eChallenge program showcased the results of months of dedicated research, customer discovery, product launches and countless iterations. In polished, confident one-minute pitches, they presented ideas that tackled real-world challenges, from energy affordability and wildfire risk reduction to respiratory health, women’s wellbeing, education, sustainable land management (yes, with goats!), space-industry careers, mining innovation, and the future of digital marketplaces.

Amidst fierce competition for nearly A$120,000 in prizes, what truly stood out was the courage, collaboration, and generosity demonstrated by every student on stage. At ThincLab and the University of Adelaide, it’s clear that innovation isn’t just encouraged — it’s accelerating.

🏆 2025 eChallenge Winners

1st Place & People’s Choice SwitchBoard: A new platform leveraging Consumer Data Right to help Australians secure optimal energy plans and avoid “loyalty tax” on their bills.

2nd Place Amazing Graze: A sustainable, evidence-based fuel-load reduction service using targeted goat grazing on high-risk land across South Australia.

3rd Place (joint):
Quixly: An AI-powered learning tool that transforms study material into personalised quizzes, flashcards and guides for families and teachers.

RadioAI: Transforming traditional mining radios into intelligent, data-driven safety tools — delivering instant answers and automatic hazard logging.

Congratulations to this year’s finalists on an exceptional standard of work 🙌

Thank you to our guests, sponsors, partners, and participating students for your contribution to a successful event and for continuing to support Australia’s emerging innovators.

🎓✨ Last week we celebrated the graduation of the third South Australian cohort of the Pathways to Politics for Women program at the National Wine Centre.

This national initiative – now in its 10th year – is changing the face of politics helping women strengthen their political skills, build confidence, and expand networks to pursue elected office and succeed as leaders.

Seventeen inspiring participants graduated, joining a growing community of alumni who have already achieved 92 electoral successes across all levels of government.

Former Deputy Premier The Honourable Vickie Chapman shared insights with the Pathways graduates, drawing on her own experiences in public life. Chancellor Catherine Branson offered warm congratulations to the cohort and paid tribute to the many female political leaders who have been part of the University’s history.

We congratulate our graduates and thank the distinguished speakers, parliamentarians, and program leaders who joined us to mark this milestone. Together, we’re building a stronger, more representative democracy 💜

Your morning coffee might be protecting your heart ☕ ❤️

New research led by the University of Adelaide and University of California San Francisco UCSF has found that drinking one cup of coffee a day could help reduce atrial fibrillation (AF), a common heart condition that affects 1 in 3 people and is linked to heart failure, stroke and premature death.

A clinical trial of 200 AF patients across Australia, the US and Canada found that half drank at least one coffee daily and the other half avoided all caffeine.

Over six months of monitoring, researchers made a surprising discovery, “Coffee drinkers experienced a significant reduction in AF compared to those who avoided caffeine,” Professor Christopher X. Wong, University of Adelaide and Royal Adelaide Hospital.

Your daily brew might be doing more than you think ☕❤️

Recently, the University of Adelaide hosted a two-week simulated space mission, the only one of its kind in Australia 🚀🛰️

In partnership with international space research and development start-up ICEE.Space, the ADAMA Analogue Astronaut Mission ran from 9–22 October 2025, joining concurrent analogue missions taking place around the world.

Four analogue astronauts lived and worked in a controlled environment at the University’s Exterres CRATER facility at Roseworthy campus, testing sustainable mission systems, next-generation spacesuits and habitats, and performing lunar mission simulations.

These experiments are helping researchers better understand how astronauts can adapt and thrive while living in space 🌕✨
