VUPlay

VUPlay These spaces are aimed at children directing their own play, for their own reasons.

Victoria University EC students completing a placement provide a variety of loose parts and support Pop-Up play spaces in various communities throughout Australia.

After attending the Pop-Up a child said to his mother,

“This is the best day of my life.” - 5 yrs

Moments like this remind me why play matters, especially play in public spaces, simple materials, open environments, and time to explore can create experiences children carry with them forever.

A rainy, quiet morning onsite in Glenelg meant the environment held its breath for a while — saturated ground, low activation, and a waiting stance until conditions shifted.

By the afternoon the sun returned, the space opened, and children began to wander in. As soon as they arrived, the environment transformed: loose parts moved, materials were explored, and play narratives emerged with that familiar ease that only children bring.

These small, spontaneous moments of community play — shaped entirely by weather, timing and curiosity — are the heart of this work.

Play fills my heart with joy.

I spent the morning at Footscray Community Arts. The sun was shining and so many in the community came out for a play.

There’s really no better way to spend a morning — loose parts, imagination, and child‑led moments everywhere.

Every Thursday, 10am–12pm.

Field note:

A quiet moment from recent practice keeps returning to me

how children stay with a place,
how they circle it,
how meaning settles through movement and repetition.

How we hold and map places in our bodies,
often without realising it.

Two‑week break 🌼
I’m on leave and the page won’t be monitored during this time. Pop-Ups will still run across our sites, with the usual ebb and flow that comes with community play.
Wishing everyone playful, imaginative days ahead 💛

Mentor PD Day yesterday reminded me how much strength sits in our community of practice. These mentors facilitate across several of our sites, holding space for children, families, and play in ways that are thoughtful, brave, and deeply human.

Catching up with them always feels grounding — a reminder that Playwork grows through relationships.

We're sorry for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding.

We'll be back next week and look forward to seeing everyone then for more play, creativity and connection. 🎈

We had the pleasure of hosting early childhood students from Hong Kong Metropolitan University this week.

After exploring Playwork in the morning, students visited one of our Playwork Pop-Ups in the afternoon to see practice in action — where play unfolds through space, materials and relationships.

A great opportunity to share ideas across contexts and cultures.
