Hot off the press! 🐋
Congratulations to UWA Albany student Katy Fannei and the research team on the publication of their new study in Marine Mammal Science, highlighting the importance of southern Western Australia as a key nursery habitat for endangered Southern Right Whales.
Using aerial surveys conducted between 2021–2024, the team recorded nearly 6,000 whale sightings along 450km of coastline, with mother–calf pairs making up around 72% of sightings.
A fantastic achievement and an important contribution to whale conservation research. 👏
