🤝 This year, UWA Albany is proud to acknowledge and support National Reconciliation Week (NRW) 2026.

NRW is a time for all Australians to reflect on our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to consider how each of us can contribute to reconciliation in Australia.

At UWA Albany, we are committed to listening, learning and walking alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through respect, truth-telling and shared responsibility.

What a beautiful morning in Albany for our Crawley Optometry students ☀️

This morning, Shandell and Jasmine facilitated a Cultural Orientation out on Country.

It was a wonderful opportunity for students to connect with Country, culture and community while learning more about the local region and Aboriginal perspectives.

🌿 Students in the Aboriginal Voices unit, led by Shandell Cummings, recently took part in a series of hands-on cultural learning experiences focused on Aboriginal resilience, sustainability and traditional knowledge.

Field trips included visits to the Oyster Harbour fish traps and Upper Kalgan, where students learnt about traditional fishing practices, local history and archaeology. Students also explored bush foods and medicines with Jessikah Woods from Awesome Aboriginals, and joined Larry Blight from Kurrah Mia for a hands-on traditional toolmaking session.

What exciting classes to be part of at UWA Albany! These experiences gave students a valuable opportunity to connect with local culture, history and knowledge on Country.

✨ Congratulations to our UWA Albany students who recently showcased their experiences and reflections from their Semester 1, 2026 Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placements. It was inspiring to hear about the skills they developed, the industry knowledge they gained, and the impact these real-world experiences have had on their learning journey.

We’re excited to continue supporting our students who are undertaking WIL placements over the winter break and into Semester 2, 2026!

Yesterday, we were proud to host the 2026 launch of UWA’s Career Mentor Link Program at our breakfast event at UWA Albany. It was a fantastic morning celebrating community, collaboration, and supporting future talent.

A big thank you to Andy Chung from ESG Matters Australia and founder of ReasonQ, who travelled all the way from Japan to join us in person and support this year’s program.

We’re also incredibly grateful to our volunteer mentors for generously sharing their time, knowledge, and experience to help guide UWA students on their career journeys. Here’s to a year of growth, learning, and opportunity! 🌟

Hot off the press! 🐋

Congratulations to UWA Albany student Katy Fannei and the research team on the publication of their new study in Marine Mammal Science, highlighting the importance of southern Western Australia as a key nursery habitat for endangered Southern Right Whales.

Using aerial surveys conducted between 2021–2024, the team recorded nearly 6,000 whale sightings along 450km of coastline, with mother–calf pairs making up around 72% of sightings.

A fantastic achievement and an important contribution to whale conservation research. 👏
