UNE’s Sorry Day event today challenged attendees to sit with difficult questions rather than easy answers.

The gathering reflected on the Stolen Generations, the meaning of reconciliation and what action can look like in everyday life. It was a reminder that reconciliation is not just symbolic - it asks something of all of us.

Anaiwan Elder Uncle Steve Widders gave a generous Welcome to Country at the event, held on the UNE Armidale campus.

UNE Executive Director of Future Students, Engagement and Technologies, Dr Neil Durrant, then encouraged those gathered to think deeply about the difference between apologies that acknowledge harm and apologies followed by meaningful action - both individually and collectively.

UNE Vice-Chancellor Prof Chris Moran also shared his reflections on Sorry Day and reconciliation. Community member Aunty Narelle shared a personal encounter with twins separated by the policies of the Stolen Generations, and raised on opposite sides of the world.

Staff, students and community members also added personal messages to the Sorry Tree, reflecting on healing, truth-telling and reconciliation.

Thank you to the UNE community for attending this event ahead of National Reconciliation Week to reflect not only on Australia’s history, but on the actions and responsibilities that shape its future.
