Textbooks are a fundamental part of university study, but for Bachelor of Zoology student Marama Harkness, they are especially important.

As a student with hearing loss, Marama places particular value on written learning materials, which help her revisit and build on key course content.

In 2025, Marama received the Quota Club of Armidale scholarship, which meant she could focus on her degree instead of worrying about textbook costs.

Professor Bill McClymont taught generations of UNE students the power of systems thinking: that great outcomes happen when many parts work together.

Now, that philosophy lives on through the McClymont Scholarship, after a group of UNE Rural Science graduates, alumni and former staff pooled their resources to honour their pioneering educator.

The scholarship is helping students like Charlotte Patterson pursue a future in agriculture. For this first-year Rural Science student from Central Queensland, the funds are easing the pressure of rent, food and study costs while she focuses on her degree.

It’s a powerful reminder that collective giving creates real impact and that, together, we can change lives.

At 15, Vanessa Sadler dreamed of becoming a psychologist. Life took her in other directions: work, family, raising children, and countless competing responsibilities.

But that dream never disappeared and, at 41, amid COVID and home-schooling, she returned to study.

Today, with support from UNE’s Sole Parents and Carers Country Scholarship, Vanessa is pursuing that goal while raising two teenage boys on her own.

“My studies have been a big leap of faith ... This UNE scholarship has provided that soft landing for me.”

For Bachelor of Special and Inclusive Education student Jane Clifford, who lives in regional Victoria, the scholarship has enabled her to buy important teaching resources while also meeting household expenses.

“As a single parent to a child with autism, I never put my needs first. Even working part-time has proven difficult. But my studies are a way to set myself up for a sustainable future career – one in which I can help children live better lives."

From meeting at UNE in the 80s to navigating family and two successful careers…

Meet one of UNE’s favourite power couples, Dr Gerard Davis and Professor Kerrie Mengersen.

Gerard was one of our 2025 Distinguished Alumni Award recipients for his pioneering leadership and global innovation in the agricultural sector, while Kerrie is a renowned statistician, praised for her leadership ability and passion for developing young researchers in statistics and the applied sciences.

The pair recently paid the campus a visit, so we caught up with them to find out how they met, their tips for balancing life and career, and their advice for fellow high achievers.
