Failure to effectively manage succession can have disastrous consequences – for the farm business, for farm families, and for rural communities that rely on inter-generational farming families to support physical and social infrastructure.

The first national survey of farm business succession to be made in 20 years has been launched by a team from the University of New England, AU (UNE), with the aim of improving one of the most challenging aspects of agriculture.

To be statistically robust, the survey will need 700-plus respondents - so please send this on to anyone who you think may be able to contribute!

The NSW Local Court is modernising! Under proposed amendments to the Local Court Act 2007, Local Court magistrates will now be known as judges, reflecting the seriousness, volume, and complexity of their work.

⚖️ The Local Court is the busiest in Australia, with over 90% of judicial decisions in NSW made in this jurisdiction.

⚖️ In 2023, 376,160 criminal matters were commenced - a 39.7% increase since 2012 - along with 64,904 civil matters, a 25.4% increase from 2022.

⚖️ This change brings NSW in line with modern terminology used internationally and better highlights the vital role these judicial officers play.

OAM Magistrate Michael Holmes of Armidale NSW shared his thoughts on this historic change:

"𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘊𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘵, 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘪𝘴 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘣𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 '𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘣𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘚𝘞 𝘫𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮,' 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘦𝘥 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘊𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘵 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦."

Josh is in his first year of studying a Bachelor of Agribusiness and is currently entering Trimester 3.

"Though I’ve only been working at the UNE SMART Farm for a few weeks, I’m already enjoying the experience and the knowledge I’m gaining from the staff. I particularly appreciate the hands-on, practical work with animals."

"I grew up on and around farms and studied Agriculture during my senior years at school, which fostered my love for farms and animals."
