Since its establishment in 1993, the School of Law at the University of New England has developed an important position in Australia's legal and scholarly community. As the country's largest and most experienced distance provider of legal education, it provides opportunities to undertake Australian legal studies for people living anywhere on the continent and beyond, who might otherwise lack these opportunities. It boasts very high levels of satisfaction from its students, who often acknowledge that their success is largely due to the opportunities that they would not have had without UNE's School of Law. The School of Law also provides a unique, supportive face-to-face teaching environment, with small class sizes and committed teachers for those students who are able to study on the UNE campus at Armidale

As a community of highly qualified scholars, the School combines genuine collegiality and friendship, with a strong commitment to research. Enjoying a growing cohort of research higher degree students and a unique specialisation in the law and law reform issues relevant to rural communities, the School is delivering an increasing amount of high-quality and high-impact legal scholarship. Our higher degree research programme attracts scholars from all parts of the world, including the USA, central Asia, the middle East, and the Nordic countries. The increasing recognition of our scholarship is illustrated by our doctoral students winning awards such as the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law PhD scholar of the year in each of the last two years, and the prestigious Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship for Canada; and by the recent award of the only ARC Early Career Researcher award for the legal discipline to one of our emerging researchers. For students at all levels, the School of Law at UNE represents an unique opportunity to become part of an increasingly well-recognised centre for developing legal scholarship in Australia and internationally, with an uniquely flexible system for delivering that education.

A big congratulations to UNE alumni Tim Haslam, Anna Madden and Sonya Cominskey who have all been named medallists in the 2026 Australian Agriculture Awards.

The awards celebrate farmers, leaders, and agribusiness professionals across five categories from each state, culminating in the National Award Ceremony in Canberra in November where one Australian Agriculture Medallist will be selected.

Meet UNE's state winners:

🌾 Sonya Comiskey - QLD/NT Women In Agriculture Medallist - Since studying a Bachelor of Administrative Leadership at UNE, Sonya has gone on to establish Pine Tree Projects which sees her working with the agriculture industry, agrifoodtech innovation and on major regional development projects.

🌾Anna Madden - NSW/ACT Women In Agriculture Medallist - After studying a Bachelor of Rural Science with Honours and attending Robb College, Anna has built a career as an agricultural consultant, small-business owner, innovator and advocate for sustainable farming systems across rural and regional Australia. She is also the co-founder and manager of The Crop Capsule Company, a start-up pioneering biological control delivery systems for large area crops.

🌾 Tim Haslam - WA Toyota Wellbeing and Safety in Agriculture Medallist - Tim studied a Bachelor of Rural Science and has become a national advocate for fire safety after a fire erupted during the harvest of his barley crop in 2023 resulting in burns to 38 percent of his body.

Best of luck to our three UNE state medallists!

A huge congratulations to 's Dr Wellett Potter on receiving the Tune FM 106.9 2026 Academic of the Year Award.

Dr Potter has loved the chance to speak with Ash and the TuneFM team, helping make intellectual property law clearer and more accessible for the wider community.

Dr Potter was unable to attend the event, so Paul Sattler accepted the award on her behalf.

"I was deeply honoured to receive the TUNEFM 2026 Academic of the Year Award. I have genuinely enjoyed every interview I have done with Ash and the TuneFM team and am grateful for the opportunity to discuss intellectual property law to help make it accessible to the wider community. Last week, helped launch the inaugural UNE Sydney Public Talk Series at our Parramatta campus with Housing Futures: Beyond Silos, Toward Solutions. The conversation brought together planners, property and construction professionals, lawyers, students and community members to tackle one of Australia’s most urgent challenges.

Our panellists Aashreetha Koonu (Hawkesbury City Council), John Engeler (Shelter NSW), Samuel Gardner RQV (Marsh Global) and Thomas Williams (construction lawyer and University of New England, AU PhD candidate) challenged the idea that faster approvals alone will fix the problem. They discussed how new construction adds only 1 to 2% to housing stock in a good year, how tax settings can shift the market quickly, and why vacancy rates below 1% make the impacts immediate and unequal.

A special thanks to co organisers Dr Isara Khanjanasthiti and Dr Imelda Deinla for bringing this cross sector discussion to life. Next up: data centres, the AI boom, and the communities living alongside them. Watch this space.

UNE Law students Felicity Hill, Emily Riley and Ruth Maxey recently appeared in a moot at the Federal Court of Australia in Sydney, gaining valuable real-world advocacy experience as they tested their written and oral arguments in a genuine courtroom setting.

Reflecting on the experience and LAW480, Felicity shared: “I gained a lot of knowledge throughout the trimester. This will stick with me for not only the remainder of my degree, but far beyond. Today’s moot was no exception – it was such a fantastic opportunity to appear in court alongside Emily and Ruth.”

Their commitment to preparation, teamwork and professional presentation in court reflects the best of the UNE Law experience, and is helping them build the skills and confidence they’ll carry into practice.

Please join us in congratulating Felicity, Emily and Ruth on their impressive moot performance and their ongoing journey towards practice-ready legal careers. 👏

warmly congratulates Samuel Biresaw (PhD in Law) on being awarded the University of New England, AU’s Chancellor’s Doctoral Research Medal (2026) in recognition of the outstanding quality of his doctoral research.

Samuel’s Thesis by Publication, 'Critical Analysis of the Law and Practice of Insolvency in Ethiopia in Protecting Creditors’ Interests', delivers a rigorous and highly original examination of insolvency law in action, with a focus on creditor protection. His research draws on doctrinal analysis, qualitative interviews, international best practice, and a significant empirical contribution through the analysis of a 25-year dataset of insolvency court decisions. It also speaks to wider common law and international audiences through scholarship that examines the theories and aims of insolvency law, and creditor protection rights worldwide.

Across his candidature, Samuel has built an exceptional research profile with 11 publications, including articles in leading international journals and book chapters published in collaboration with INSOL International, as well as strong engagement through international conferences and professional research networks. His work has also been recognised through awards including UNE’s DVCR Research Award (2025) and the Keith and Dorothy Mackay Travel Award (2024).

Samuel’s achievement is a proud moment for our UNEHDR community, UNE Law School, and UNE, and it reflects the impact that high-quality, globally engaged legal research can have. Congratulations, Samuel! 👏💚

We were proud to host a Year 11 class of Legal Studies students from Glen Innes High School in the Law School last month.

Lecturer Paul Akon shared with the students a bit about how the legal system works in Australia, and explained some of the customs and traditions used in an Australian Court of Law – and why these are still important today. The students practised various roles in the Moot Court, and learnt about their study options through our Law Program (including why they should definitely apply for Early Entry next year – for a guaranteed place at the University of New England, AU, even before HSC results are out!)

We look forward to welcoming the students back to UNE!

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸. 𝗗𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗿𝗴𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁?

From Trump-era tariffs to today’s renewed push for industrial policy worldwide, trade protectionism is shaping headlines again.

In our latest story, Dr Mathew Frith explains why the debate has lost a key piece of history. His new book reconstructs the nineteenth-century American Protectionist School, from Alexander Hamilton to a “forgotten” trove of nearly seventy economists and statesmen, and shows how their focus on diversification, entrepreneurship, and invention-led growth differs from modern, trade balance obsessed arguments.
