This achievement is a strong reflection of the creativity, collaboration and emerging talent within Curtin’s Screen Arts program.

On 13 May, Tama delivered a keynote at the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families (TFCF) Social Welfare Forum, exploring global perspectives on digital wellbeing for vulnerable families.
With 76 years of impact, TFCF continues to lead important conversations on children’s wellbeing and policy. Tama shared insights on Australia’s under-16s social media ban — including its early challenges and the reality that it’s still too soon to know if it truly works.
The session sparked rich discussion with a global audience, including Taiwanese government representatives, and a standout exchange with Legislator and child rights advocate Ngalim Tiunn.
An inspiring space for collaboration on shaping safer digital futures for young people 🌏

A story of courage that changed history.

The Good Sea by Associate Professor Vannessa Hearman follows a remarkable group of East Timorese refugees who arrived in Australia in 1995 on a small fishing boat.

Detained at Curtin Air Force Base in WA, their journey didn’t just make headlines — it helped reshape Australia’s relationship with Indonesia and reignited the fight for East Timor’s independence.

📚 Available now via Melbourne University Press, major online retailers, and select bookstores — including Planet Books in Perth. You can also find it online at Amazon Australia and The Nile.

A powerful read about resilience, politics, and the impact of human stories.

Congratulations to Vannessa Hearman on this powerful and important contribution.

Human Rights and Diversity Dialogues Series
Navigating Interreligious Harmony in an Age of Intolerance

Australia is one of the world’s most culturally and religiously diverse societies, yet this diversity exists alongside growing concerns about social cohesion. How can we nurture authentic interreligious harmony – one that accommodates differences, empowers minority voices, and avoids reducing traditions to political tools?

The Human Rights and Diversity Dialogues Series, a new initiative co-hosted by the Centre for Human Rights Education and Curtin Humanities Global Futures platform, brings together scholars and practitioners to explore when and how interreligious harmony and human rights can genuinely flourish in contexts of cultural and religious diversity.

In the first panel discussion, drawing on their experience and research, speakers will reflect on their own positioning in relation to religion, then critically examine the intersections of religious diversity with social cohesion, free speech, and minority rights. Join us for the first panel discussion in this series.

Congratulations to Adele Chai, Emma Donald, and team on winning Best Music Video at the London International Student Film Awards for "Was Someone on Your Mind" by Siena Rebelo.

The award‑winning video is an experimental work exploring ideas of disconnection within a relationship. Adele and Emma were third‑year students in the Advanced Studio Workshop in 2025, taught by Michelle Johnston and Sally Goldrick.

The unit partners students with WA Music and local artists, providing valuable opportunities to collaborate and produce original music videos.
