We’re pleased to share "We Want the World to Know", a youth podcast project co-designed by our MA student Syifa Isnaini during her placement with Millennium Kids, with the first episode now published. As Syifa describes it, the project was inspired by bell hooks’ critical pedagogy and Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violent resistance, and developed through deliberative democracy workshops alongside a podcast created by young people aged 13 and above at WA Wildlife in Walliabup (Bibra Lake).

The project also extends Syifa’s earlier creative work, where she explored podcasts as a contemporary digital form of Satyagraha. What is especially striking about this work is the way it brings together theory, creativity, and community-based practice in a genuinely youth-led form.

For Syifa, one of the most rewarding aspects of the project has been the opportunity to bring ideas from the Master of Human Rights and Global Engagement into lived practice through a collaborative process with young people. We congratulate her on the release of the first episode and on this thoughtful and meaningful contribution.

CHRE is pleased to share that our Director, Associate Professor Yirga Gelaw Woldeyes will be taking part in the ABC Big Day of Books literary festival this Saturday.

Yirga will join acclaimed Australian authors Bruce Pascoe and Olivia de Zilva to discuss on the theme of “Two Hearts, Two Cultures: Many ways of knowing and sharing”.

This national public event is hosted by ABC Radio, in partnership with Fremantle Press, UWA Publishing, Magabala Books, Copyright Agency Limited, Hachette, Centre for Stories and Beaufort St Books.

Start conversations about refugees and human rights with verified information. Prevent the spread of mis- and disinformation.

3- SPEAK UP.
Call out discrimination and harmful stereotypes of refugees.

4- REPORT.
Contribute to providing safe spaces for refugees. Report hate speech online and offline.

5- TEACH.
Encourage a culture of acceptance and lead by example. Educate others to promote diversity and respect.

Hate speech online can cause real-world harm to refugees. Everybody has a role to play to say no to hate.

We are delighted to celebrate the creation of a new student-led human rights club by students from Curtin Centre for Human Rights Education and Global Engagement. This exciting new club will be led by students, and will work closely with staff and other students reflecting the energy, commitment, and leadership of our student community.
Well done to Zebib Hadish, Mrinalini Martin and all the students who are organising and coordinating this initiative.

Wonderful to see Curtin Centre for Human Rights Education's HDR students presenting their research at this year’s Milestone Review.

Congratulations to Yemisi Rukayat Ajibade Daniel, whose PhD explores Indigenous religion, religious freedom, and contemporary practice in Yorubaland, and to Mrinalini Martin Pakhare, whose Master of Philosophy research examines how survivor leadership networks support the economic empowerment and sustainable reintegration of human trafficking survivors.

What role do protest, free speech and the arts play in building a more just society?

At a time when laws that could significantly affect the right to protest in Western Australia are being debated, these are crucial questions.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Navigating Interreligious Harmony in an Age of Intolerance, the first event in our new Human Rights and Diversity Dialogues Series, organised by the Centre for Human Rights Education (CHRE) and Curtin Humanities Global Futures. We are grateful to our audience for contributing to such a thoughtful and engaged discussion on one of the most urgent issues of our time.

A special thank you to our distinguished speakers: Professor Richard Blythe, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Faculty of Humanities; Dr Azim Zahir, Moderator; Professor Farida Fozdar, Dean of Global Futures; Professor Anthony J. Langlois, Stan Perron Dean of Applied Ethics; and Associate Professor Yirga Gelaw Woldeyes, Director of the Centre for Human Rights Education.

The event highlighted the importance of creating spaces where religious and cultural diversity are valued and protected, and human rights remain central to public dialogue.

Congratulations to CHRE's MA student Zebib Hadish Baraki on her powerful presentation at the second webinar in the Human Rights-Based Universities (HRBU) in ASEAN series, held on Monday, 25 May 2026.

Under the theme “Co-creating Safe and Inclusive Universities: Advancing Human Rights and Centering Youth Voices in a Polycrisis Era,”
Zebib delivered a compelling message on the importance of building universities where inclusion is foundational, not an afterthought. Her voice as a disability advocate, scholar, and champion for inclusive education brought clarity, courage, and urgency to the conversation.

Congratulations as well to all members of the panel who presented with Zebib. CHRE’s Associate Professor Lisa Hartley; Dr Vachararurai Boontinand, Lecturer, Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies, Mahidol University and Convener of AUN-HRE; Joy R. Argote, Student, University of the Philippines, and former intern for HRBU at AUN-HRE.
