Today we commemorate Mabo Day β€οΈπŸ’›πŸ–€

Observed each year on 3 June, Mabo Day honours the life and legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo, whose determination and advocacy led to one of the most significant legal decisions in Australian history.

The landmark Mabo decision overturned the doctrine of terra nullius and recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have enduring rights and connections to Country that pre-date colonisation. This paved the way for the Native Title Act 1993 and the recognition of native title rights across Australia.

As the final day of National Reconciliation Week, Mabo Day invites us all to reflect on our shared history and to continue learning, listening and taking meaningful action towards reconciliation.

In the spirit of this year's National Reconciliation Week theme, "All In for Reconciliation," let us celebrate the achievements of the past while continuing to work together towards justice, recognition and a stronger future for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

πŸ–€πŸ’›β€οΈ National Reconciliation Week 2026 πŸ’™πŸ’šπŸ€πŸ–€

From 26 May – 3 June we recognise National Reconciliation Week and this year’s theme: β€œAll in for Reconciliation.”

This theme calls on all Australians to actively contribute to reconciliation through meaningful action, truth-telling, respect and connection. Reconciliation is everyone’s responsibility, and together we can help create a more just, equitable and united future.

At the Centre for Aboriginal Studies, we acknowledge the strength and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities, and the importance of continuing to walk together in partnership, learning and understanding.

This week is an opportunity to reflect on our shared histories, celebrate culture, and commit to actions that support lasting change.

Today on National Sorry Day we pause to reflect, remember and honour the Stolen Generations Survivors, their families and communities. πŸ–€πŸ’›β€οΈ

This year’s theme β€œFrom Sorry to Action” reminds us that sorry must be accompanied by meaningful action. It calls on all Australians to continue learning, listening and working towards healing, truth-telling and reconciliation.

National Sorry Day recognises the strength, resilience and courage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples whilst acknowledging the ongoing impacts of policies that forcibly removed children from their families, communities and culture.

Healing comes through connection, understanding and collective commitment to creating a more respectful and just future for generations to come.
