New HoS - announced by Prof Gordon Wyeth this morning!

=======================

Dear Colleagues

I am pleased to announce that Professor Troy Farrell has been appointed as the new Head of School for Mathematical Sciences. Troy holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) from the University of Newcastle, and a PhD from QUT. Troy stayed on at QUT and has risen through the academic ranks on the basis of his achievements in teaching, research and leadership. He holds the E.O. Tuck Medal for outstanding research and distinguished service in Applied Mathematics, acknowledging his significant and extensive engagement with applied mathematics research. He was awarded a Carrick Award for Australian University Teaching and has remarkably positive student feedback for his work in the classroom. His appointment to Head of School is accompanied by his well-deserved promotion to Professor.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the outgoing Head of School, Ian Turner, for his outstanding leadership of Mathematical Sciences at QUT. The School has enjoyed remarkable success in research and education under his guidance, and Ian has been a key figure in the development of the Science and Engineering Faculty. Ian will continue at QUT as a Professor in the School, contributing in both research and teaching. Thank you Ian for your contribution and your quiet, confident manner that is inspirational to so many of us.

Troy will commence as Head of School, Mathematical Sciences on Monday 23rd November 2015.

Regards
Gordon

Big news for QUT Maths! :)

Professor Kerrie Mengersen has been announced as one of only 15 new Australian Laureate Fellows for 2015.

The award is a particular achievement given the brutality of the competition at this level.

Kerrie’s project Bayesian Learning for Decision Making in the Big Data Era has been awarded $2.4 million over five years and will transform the way in which Australia is equipped to thrive in the big data era by translating statistical knowledge to real-world challenges in industry, environment and health.

Message from the Head of School, Professor Ian Turner:

After 30 years of excellent service to both the School and QUT, Professor Vo Anh announced his retirement to take effect from July this year.

Vo has taught across all levels and all disciplines within the School, from large first year classes when he first arrived in the 80's to small third and Honours level classes more recently. His research efforts have been exceptional with a number of successful ARC Linkage and Discovery grants, and an enormous number of high quality journal articles in international journals. He has also supervised 19 HDR students. His efforts have undoubtedly had a very positive impact on our strong positioning in the mathematical sciences both nationally and internationally. Vo has also been involved in a number of important service roles within the School.

Vo has been a great mentor and friend to many of us, and I know you will join with me in wishing him every success for the future. Vo will remain linked to the School as an Adjunct Professor. He plans to move base in the near future to the USA to be close to his family in Orlando.
