QUT School of Clinical Sciences

QUT School of Clinical Sciences The School of Clinical Sciences comprises four discipline areas in health:
Medical Radiation Sciences
Paramedic Science
Pharmacy
Podiatry.

Each discipline delivers courses that offer real world clinical experience taught by industry professionals. All of the disciplines have extensive collaborations with institutes and centres, government departments, industry and professional organisations, and universities around the world. Our research seeks to improve clinical practice within each of the disciplines with the aim to improve health

outcomes for communities. Through collaborative, applied research, we explore ways to improve technologies and create more effective methods for treating chronic health conditions.

Excessive screen time is not only disrupting sleep but also taking a toll on eye health.

Professor Scott Read from our Optometry team discussed with ABC the growing prevalence of dry eye disease among younger people, attributing it to lifestyle factors such as increased digital device use.

Studies indicate that as many as 20% of children could be affected by this condition, underscoring the need for greater awareness of eye health in today's digital world.

The chronic and progressive disease is being found in younger Australians with children as young as 12 developing symptoms.

Congratulations to Dr. Kate Pecar on the completion of her PhD!

Under the guidance of her dedicated supervisors, Professor Sharon Bentley (Principal Supervisor), Dr. Shelley Hopkins (Associate Supervisor), and Adjunct Associate Professor Kristopher Rallah Baker (External Supervisor), Dr. Pecar's research has provided invaluable insights into the state of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health education in optometry programs across Australia.

Her research mapped curricula, surveyed educators and students, and developed consensus-based guidelines for creating a resource repository to better support educators in this crucial area. The findings of her study highlight both the progress and the ongoing challenges, such as the need for more authentic learning opportunities and resources authored by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals.

Congratulations once again, Dr. Pecar, on this monumental achievement!
